i know the pictures are kinda dark but give it a shot how should i improve my mics or what thecnique? thanks

get better mics, then try using an xy configuration for the OH's

EDIT: This may not sound better, but its a suggestion.

Those pictures are pretty dark. The snare and tom mics seems like they're in the usual "starting point" placement, but I can't tell what needs changing without hearing it. Or being there, really, LOL. The kick mic seems like it's pointed into the drum and not towards the beater. And depending on the actual sound of the drum, you might find that the kick mic sounds better a few inches away from the drum and not inside it. Recording mic'ing techniques sometimes differ from live mic'ing. IMO, drums are a bitch to record well, and you really need to spend the time with placement. Experiment. Move mics around. If you can get someone to help, all the better.

I agree with trying an X-Y on the overheads. But try other stuff, too, until you're happy. And check this thread - some good links: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=145095

yeah they defintly are a bitch ... thanks for the advice... what does the X-Y look like and why does it sound better than just a stereo set up

It looks like this and gives you a good stereo field, while minimizing phasing:

when using the x-y micing on the OH's would i pan them hard left and right?

yes, that is how it is generally done.

So XY works by eliminating the time factor and relying solely on the cardioid patterns of the mics. A spaced pair works more on creating the image by the difference in time it takes a sound to get to each mic (and the volume, where it's louder if it's closer).

I've been using a mono OH (baby bottle) lately and it's nice.
