I just got one, but I haven't loaded it up yet with my stuff. I'll post this weekend when I get it all going.
It's supposedly not the quietest thing in the world, but certainly better than a standard Antec or Chieftec case. the lower speed 120mm fan and single fan PS probably help. If nothing else, it is very well built and I can always add a Fortron Aurora or Zalman PS later.

It is quite by office standards, but not by soundstudio standards.
The noisiest part - power supply fan.
120mm case fan is variable speed, but even at full speed it is reasonably quite.
Hard drives are mounted on rubber washers, which helps to damp the sound a lot. I am using three quite Seagate Barracudas, and I need to REALLY listen to hear them work.
Hard drives are mounted "sideways" i.e. all hard drive connectors will be facing you when you take side panel of the case off. It is very convenient for installing, connecting and re-connecting the drives.
Like Polaris20 said it is very well built and sturdy. Not a singe sharp edge inside.
Overall it is a very good case. When they finally make reasonably priced REALLY quite power supply unit, it will become a truly quite box.

Have you tried large low-speed PAPST fans? they're so silent. and so expensive too.

i custom build daws for ppl all the time. the main case i use is the Lian Li PC-6070. i even use it.. its dead quiet.. seeing that i have my cpu water cooled i don't get cpu fan noise.. and the psu fan is real quiet.. has a light smooth sound that won't piss you off, like a glyph harddrives.
it looks cool too.. looks kinda like a G5...

Like I said, Sonata's 120mm case fan is reasonably quite.
Couple years ago when I was looking for a quite 80mm fan for CPU cooler I checked out Papst fans, but Panaflo turned out to be quiter and cheaper. Panaflo fan with Alfa heatsink - very quite combination.

So, C9-2001, would the Lian case still be dead quiet without going the water-cooled route? I think I might get the Sonata anyway, as I can find it easily locally, and I'm just looking for something reasonably quieter without going to too much trouble and expense. If the PS can be upgraded to something quieter later, that's cool (no pun intended). I definitely don't want to screw around with water cooling on an old 1GHz PIII. I just thought of something else, too. Can you water-cool a rackmount pc? Things that make me go 'hmmm'. Doesn't take much.

i see no reason why you couldn't water cool a rackmount pc..
as for my system.. i use to have a Artic cooling fan on my cpu and i still didn't hear it.. i heard it when it went bad lol.
but thats my main case when building graphic computers and daws.. i use some shuttles and rackmount cases too

Well I got all my stuff into the Sonata. I am pretty damn impressed. It really is quiet. I think the only thing I will do for awhile will be to replace the CPU fan with a Zalman or Nexus.
