Another Vavle Jr Question

People seem to ask a lot of questions about this little amp. I have a couple questions.

How good is the Valve Jr Combo?
What kind of cabinet are you running to Valve Jr Head too?

you can run the head into any cab and I see people run them into anything from 1-10" (me) to 4-12" cabs.
The cool thing is that it has 4,8 and 16 ohm taps so it's pretty versatile.
If you have any cabs at all, I think the head would be a better choice but I haven't used the combo. But I think an 8" speaker might be a little limiting compared to the head.
For $99 it's a flat out awesome head.

The combo is...interesting....don't expect much of a clean output before break up. Lacks treble too. Takes pedals quite well though.

Lt Bob,

You play out with it?
I have ..... for whatever reason the only one of my speakers that it gets loud enough to gig with is the 12" in my Mesa Blue Angel. But with that specific speaker the consensus on a couple of gigs was that it sounded better than the Mesa.
My good friend back in Baton Rouge heard it and bought one the next day. I talked to him about a month ago and he says it's his main gigging amp now!
Uses it by itself on small gigs and then just mics it when he wants more volume.

What kind of 10"

do you use it through?

And of the ones you've used it through, which one gave you the least volume?

I'm wanting to build my own cab. Any good ideas on where to start? Good plans?

the 10 is a celestion 30 or something like that.
I don't really know which gave the least volume and I'm sure whatever you use it'll be far too loud for you!
:D
I don't really do comparisons or anything like that. I'm always gigging most nights so I grab whatever amp I trip on heading out the door and use that.....
But for me, the only thing I ran it thru where it was loud enough to suit me for gigging was that Mesa speaker and I don't even know what that is ..... I'd have to go look and the amp is at least 20 feet away so I'm not gonna do it right now.

As best I can recall, it was about the same volume level thru anything I ran it thru except the Mesa which was noticably louder.

I have a valve junior head. When I tried out the valve junior combo it sounded like a little amp. I tried the VJ head on a fender 4x12 cab it sounded MUCH bigger, like a real amp instead of a practice amp.

I brought it home and am using it through a 4x12 cab with celestions and it sounds like a much bigger amp than it should, for only being 5 watts.

Open or closed?

Is the 10" open or closed? I was hoping to be able to get away with an open back, so I could just throw something together. If I do a closed back, then I gotta make sure that it's tuned for the speaker, right? Or could I just find a single 10" cab (not likely) and throw a Celestion 30 in it? I'd almost have to find a combo to use just for the cab. Doesn't sound like much fun, unless somebody has a DOA/pos combo they'd like to sell me dirt cheap. :D

See, I want mine to sound like a little amp. I def don't want to be able to gig with it. It's all about the quiet.

I'm using an 8" Johnson (made by Celestion) in a homemade cab. This cab is vented in the front. This think jams with that little speaker - that's what I've been using for recording. I stick the speaker in the bathoom with a mic, close the door and start recording.

My 10 is an open back. specifically it's a 30 watt Laney Tubefusion amp that blowed up real good about the third time I used it.
One day I'll get around to replacing the output device, until then, it's a 10"cab with knobs!
:D

Couldn't you have blowed up somethin' cheaper?

Finally, some good news!

I don't know if I'm going to go with a Celestion or a Jensen ceramic, just because I think that's what's in my old Vibro Champ and I like the sound of it.

If I do an open back enclosure, maybe I'll try both since it'll be easy to swap 'em.

I just need to hurry up and get something to hook the VJ to so I can hear what it sounds like.

Yeah, well ..... lol .... it's not like that was my intended outcome!

I love the combo; I don't have a cab so, for the money, it is great.

Clean output before break up? If you turn up the amp, and turn down the volume on your guitar, you can get a more than usable clean sound.

I agree about the treble, though.

I'm currently looking into a cab to run this into.

Anybody used the Valve special, or the valve standard, and have any thoughts on those?

And also, I just saw that at the NAMM show, epiphone debuted a valve jr cabinet, which looks like it could be a good sounding cab.
