Another tired LD Mic advice thread

Hi Folks


I plan on spending around $500 plus for a LD mic . #1 use will be vocals #2 acoustic guitar . I have an AKG 3000b and 2 C1000s...I know I know I bought them 2 years ago before I got smart . Don't get me wrong I can make them work and they serve a purpose but I really want to upgrade . My style is acoustic folk rock and I have been told I sound a bit like Cat Stevens . I have narrowed my choices somewhat . AT 4050 , Blue baby bottle . I know this has been done to death....but I would greatly appreciate any and all recommendations and ideas.

save some dough and get an AT4040

or perhaps save a little longer and get a used TLM103

Without having personal experience with either, my understanding is that the 4040 and 4050 are quite different mics (the 4050 being more neutral). A lot of people really like the 4047 because of the tranny.

One approach you could take is to buy the mic that sounds best on your voice--the most important consideration IMO. Later, when you have saved some more money, you can seek out a pair of SDCs for stereo recording the acoustic. In the meantime, all of these mics will sound good on acoustic guitar--just different.

Consider Rode NTK. A mic that works on many vocalists and is pretty damn good on acoustic guitar. Other options include AT4033, Studio Projects T-3. Of the mics you listed, the Baby Bottle is not a bad choice. Just make sure you audition whatever mic you're going to buy. If it sucks on your voice, you're screwed.-Richie

First, get rid of your AKGs, then see how much money you can add to your $500, and then see.

That's not a bad suggestion.

No, it's not a bad suggestion. That NTK has surprised me on many occasions and worked on more than I expected it to. Oh and for heavens sake, buy the optional shock mount, and USE it.

Be sure and define your dealers return policy. A good pro shop will not hesitate to accept a return for the right reasons and for someone who's not out to abuse this priviledge.

As for a mic for voice...try out as many as you can.

One to try would be the ADK TL ..multipattered and good on a lot of stuff.

Perhaps you can find a used Shure KSM44.Very good for most things.
