Another punk/screamo/posthardcore track

Note: THIS SONG IS UNFINISHD. I posted another song from this band...Excuse the playing and pay more attention to the production, they are out of practice and are only recording this as way to coordinate themselves so they can play shows again. It's the first time I've ever used more than one mic on a guitar cabinet. I like how it turned out, but I'm sure I can do better.

I used an SM57 for the left guitar(a 2004 Epi LP Custom), an I5 for the right guitar (A 1993 Mexi Strat w/a humbucker in the bridge) and a CAD M177 about 2 feet away pointed at the center of the cabinet.

It's a ROUGH mix, I am exhausted and I can't really hear what I need to hear.

A quick question for those who listen...About how much do you think I should be charging for my production? I'm doing 15/hr right now.
 
Honestly man, I think the left guitar sounds thin and boxy. Sounds like it has a good basic tone, its just not tracked/processed well. Not only that, the left guitar sounds out of tune or it has an intonation problem. The right guitar sounds pretty good. The bass lacks presence and the snare sounds dead and lifeless in the mix. The kick and rest of the kit sound pretty good though. The performance is spotty at best. I can't imagine this band actually wanting to spend money on mixing such a poor performance. I'm not trying to be a douche, just my 2 cents.
 
I wouldn't imagine either...But it's the best they can do. Believe me, I spent a long time with the drummer and we're not rushing through tracking. It's good enough for a demo so they can actually have something to show...They'll HOPEFULLY get better.

Thin and boxy? Maybe it's true testament to the I5 pwning the 57. I'm gonna give it a listen on some other systems. Thanks for the input.
 
sounds good...

song wise: not the best song or preformance, verry repititous, but production wise: you did a good job capturing their sound.
i agree with Greg_L, the bass needs more presance, but i do like the sound of the drums, and the guitars.

if i wasn't able to record my band this well i would pay 15 bucks/hour for your work. its not great, but its pretty good.
what gear are you using?

I agree, the bass needs to be hotter and maybe eq'd a bit more to stand out in the mix.

Two plug-ins that save my life every mix..
1. ampeg SVX by the creators of amplitube and
2. drumagog.

The snare sounds really dry and lo-fi ish.

Also towards the end the left guitar sounds like it's almost the only thing present and I'm not really liking the tone... well it sounds alright in the overall mix on most of the song, on that particular part though it's really thin and maybe there was too much cut in the low mids? Also, you don't have to have them panned hard left/right. Center that guitar a bit more..it's driving my left ear crazy! lol

15/hr is a fair price I wouldn't take less if that's what you're asking us. (I mean it wouldn't even be worth anyones time at that point)
 
second listen.. I hear amp noise in the beginning....might want to do something about that ;)
 
What did you do to get that kick sound?

the guitars sound like they need more lower midrange power. If you eq'ed some mids out than lesson that eq and make the guitars sound more full. I think it would help if the bass player would let his notes sustain more instead of muting everything.

The snare needs to be louder and have more highs or upper high mids to get a little more of a snarey sound. That kick sound would work better if everyone's timing was on, it kind of sticks out in a lot of places it shouldn't right now. It sticks out so much that it makes you notice the timing inconsistencies even more.

There's almost no guitar coming out of the right side near the end. If the second guitarist doesn't play there, than double track the first guitarist and pan the 2 takes instead of just panning one off to 1 side.

I'm recording a band with not so great timing right now. Drum editing is your friend, although editing this track would be a nightmare.
 
There's only one guitar halfway through. I told the guy to come back this Thursday and we'll re-do everything, because his playing was asstacular and I think I'm gonna use two I5s...I hate 57s on guitar now.

The kick sound was achieved by using Drumagog...and that's really it. I got a sample Andy Sneap (he's metal) made. Cut out the mids. Not too much else, no compression or anything. The snare was a sample of their drummer's snare but processed nil. I have since given up on trying to make it sound good and used a sample of a Black Panther The Blue Room put up. I love his gogs.

So we're re-recording this, but I'll take everything into account. I'll pan things in a bit, but I'm worried that once they track vocals, the guitars will sound good panned all the way out there. I'll also try and make my cuts in the midrange more narrow...I haven't had a treated room to mix in since I moved, but I finally started putting everything back up so I can hear the low midrange again.

My setup is pitiful - Firepod, CAD M177s, SM57s, Audix I5s, Sonar 6, all my car money went into Waves Diamond so I'm good on plugins...I do have The SVT modeler, I just can't hear shit and don't really, I'll admit, know what a good bass tone sounds like.

My room is also barely treated at this point. I have early reflections on the walls treated, and that's about it. No bass trapping and HUGE nulls around 250-300hz and below 120hz. It's a nightmare mixing anything in here but I have to make due until I can re-build traps next month. I sold my stuff before I moved so there wouldn't be so much to take.

If anyone with the Ampeg modeler can give me a starting point to work from...Or anyone that plays bass...What does a good bass sound like?
 
i dunno if you can with drumagog but it sounds like your kick is double triggering a little where it shouldnt be..... you might try turning the threashold up a tiny bit........ i can hear some spots where the double bass makes sense but in a couple spots it just seems wrong.
 
It's not double triggering, heh. Their drummer is just that sloppy.
 
eh that sucks. in that case i would almost just use the original kick track and eq it like crazt for that click.....
 
I am currently too broke to afford a real kick mic so I'm Drumagog dependent...I'm thinking about buying a cheapie just to make due so I don't have to. At times I regret buying Drumagog instead of a kick mic but there are just some cases where I'd be completely screwed without it.
