Hey everyone! I am a 32 year old bassist.. I have been playing 23 years and i am in a good solid band. We spend tons of cash on recording studios so we said lets stop that and buy what we need to do this. But the problem is we are all broke musicians. But we save up well and are willing to spend allot more on it as times goes on. But this is what we are going to start with...

M-Audio FireWire 18/14 Computer Recording Interface

Pro Tools M-Powered 7

2 KRK RP-8 Rokit Powered 8 Reference Studio Monitor

Drummer has all the mics he needs. Singer has a couple

The singer has a couple good Condenser mics...

We will also buy good cable....

Did i really miss anything that we desperately need to get started? Of course i will add on much more later.

The other question i have is what is the best way with the above gear for all of us to be able to record and have really good headphone mixes? I thought about this thing

Mackie HMX 56 6-Channel Headphone Matrix Mixer

We also have 2 decent 12 channel powered mixers should i use them instead?

Hmm really depends. So you're obviously using your PC as a DAW, are you going to have multiple rooms setup? Live recording or one take?

Well at first we are going to use it as a tool to remember jam ideas and record band practice so we can go back and listen.. But after a bit we will start trying to make a cd and we will try and separate in rooms. We got all the padding and stuff.. Just finding the time to do it all.

Well I find a four track is all you need to record jam ideas. Even done it a few times on someones phone/voice recorder.

True that! We have done that as well. But you must understand that we have been a band for 13 years now... The days of using ghetto recordings is over. :D We are all married and have kids now so we are just trying to add some spice to r lives.. LOL sounds like i am talking in a swinger forum..

And we do and will create professional cds very often.... We have spent thousands of $$$$ is recording studios in Kansas city , Tulsa , Memphis , st. Louis...

So the thought of spending that much cash these days just hurts. So if we could do this at a fraction of the cost..

Ahhh, do "Nooblets" go into Chicken Soup?

Sure sounds as if your band should be solid and able to do a few takes to get the job done on any recording.

Just a suggestion. Maybe you can find a college student to run your gear? Low cost and even if experimental, you should still be able to master some good stuff.

Seems like with your band having many responsibilities, time is a major factor?

Hard to give up the "helm" after so many years of musical fun.

Cheers,
Green Hornet :D

Eric,

My band hasn't been around as long as yours, but our lead guitarist has been around much longer and isn't keen on sinking a ton of money into the studio thing either. We are going to go with something like this. Hopefully in another month or two I can let you know how it goes.
