Damn man! If there's any chance of you getting your stuff back, will you have to return all the new gear if you get it back?

me,myself......
I don't know what I'd do......

I miss the 808 the most evev though I didn't get to use it ....but I'm in a phase now I want all new different gear for some reason....I'll give 5-0 a week and if the got nothin' for me I guess it's safe to say that shit is gone so I'll move on.....BUT......if I get it back before then I'll keep it and forget about the new gear

.............one..............

Damn...

Stories like these are exactly why I don't strap anymore. I am, sometimes unfortunately, a man of action.
Lazi,
nice idea about the climate controlled storage unit. Hope you got renter's insurance. It's not too expensive, and it's always necessary.

If I wasn't renovating and buying a commercial space (read: ADT landline & wireless alarm notification, motion lights & sensors, metal door frame & deadbolts, silent alarm switches in more than one place - including a trip switch at the board - and a soon-to-arrive german sheperd puppy with reservations at k-9 protection school), I'd either bite your idea or build a lil' shack behind my crib, complete with separate alarm system, just to keep my mind at ease. I don't like muthafuckas at my crib anyway. That's reserved for me, my earth, and whatever kids I bust off in her.

I've had shady situations occur when I lived in Atlanta, part of the reason why I moved my spot from college park to a much safer neighborhood (though I stayed well-equipped the whole 7 years I lived there), even had to run a client up outta there with a damn iron (yep, a clothing iron... I was gonna KILL that cat. Lucky he hit the door before I could get across the room - dented the shit out of my metal door, though).

I know that most people here don't have the luxury of having a space to put gear besides their home, nor do people have the opportunity to keep shit REALLY on the D.L. - not unless you really only work on the dolo tip - all you can do is lock up, double-lock, and triple lock, and insure your shit.

PGM, I feel you on leaving all the rah-rah alone, especially with your family in tow, but sometimes "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday..." Stay up. I'm thanking the Creator that your fam is safe.

L. Bronze, keep your shit on the tight all day everday. Let em think whatever. Better to guard your shit than get housed by some sorry-assed neighborhood bitch who could probably stand more than a few good ass whuppins. I think all the previous posts illustrated that shit quite clearly. When cats wanna lemme hear em flow, I toss a tape or CD in the car or somewhere, but NEVER in my studio, ESPECIALLY if it's also my rest.

it's a risky business we're in
with expensive habit (newest version is the best)
you can't trust anyone from fam to the kid that played the nice melodies at the music store
but this thing of ours requires networking (marketing start with thy neighboor-who knows this kid at work that does the same music- and so on.........)
so eventhough i'm reluctant to bring in people for development (yeah i got hit too) i know i'll have to that one day

options are

go for self (most of us are Mc's/rappers/producers these days)
only bring in the ones whose opinions you value (not necessarily musicians but artists) but you get to upload your project and get honest input on this site so you can cross that out
Security System ( somethign like flo' Dolo's will be outstanding)
Get insurance

For now it's all about me because when i got robbed i cut off most everybody (someone burnt the bridge why should i rebuild it)
i see most of them and they "know" i don't do music anymore
i'm "concentrating" on my paintings and writing poetry Unh-hun sure why not

i like the storage idea but i love my easy access when it hits me i either pull out my pda to record a draft (whistle) or if i get hit with multiple instruments i want my keyboard and that's most of the time

PS: Build your studio to be yours, don't let anyone add any gear to your setup not even a 1/4" cable from Radio Shack or a k-mart microphone

PM

Check it..... The new Layla is very sweet.... Layla 24...

I have personally have the Layla 20 and it is pretty solid....

I got it rocking on XP and it as been solid as a rock....

As for Mixer that depends....

If you want to do all ya processing with outboard gear and the mixing on an analog console then do a search on this website for a good analoge board because I don't f#ck with that anymore.....

But me personally I would go digital...... I have a Mackie 1202 but it is strictly to get my signal from my computer to the amp....

Depending on your budget can gets some really nice stuff....
If ya got a few G's to spare....
Mackie DB8
Yamaha 0R2

Me I am using Nuendo with the US 428 and Layla all of my mixing is done in the computer with plugins... I do have some outboard gear which I use to process sounds before I send them to the computer. I am looking to get the Mackie UAD-1 card which I heard is the closest thing to analog gear.... It is a DSP card strictly for plugins.....

Man let me know I got ya back...... But if ya can't find me... do a search man this Homerecording BBS is tite... ALso try Recording.org for more DAW's kid.....

Let me know how I can help.....

For the crib? or just the gear?
Do I go to a regular insurance company?

Insurance was being suggested for my storage unit. I think you can still get insured for almost anything though. If you call a insurance company and they don't carry that type of insurance. They should be able to help you find it. It doesn't cost much. Like 50-75 bucks a month to cover 20,000 in equipment. But m y company is way in Texas or somewhere.

I have the insurance but it's kind of off and on. More on than off. When the credit card starts looking crazy i gotta let it slide every now and then. I'm at the studio til like 3 or 4 in the morning so it's kinda stupid to have the stuff insured for burglary(until somebody steals everthing). If somebody tries anything it'll be during the late hours cuz of the daytime traffic. When i'm not insured i'll get extra paranoid when i gotta go out of town. Mainly cuz cats the that know me will know i'm gone. They the ones to watch cuz they know what you got and how to get. Best bet is to keep it all insured but i still think of all the dough i saved when i didnt' pay those fools for a month or two.

MM&H, if the shit is in your crib, you can get homeowners ins. to cover it, if you're "working" as a professional, you may have to make just a couple of changes. PM me if you want me to turn you on to a few companies that are worth a shit for that type of stuff - only a few are customer oriented...

Lazi, you know the risk, so it's your game to play. My situation is a bit different, so I'm tryin' to post up and shit, and that demands that I go all out. Fortunately, my soon-to-be-mother-in-law has a big-assed garden, so I don't gotta buy no veggies most of the year. 'Sides, I make fatter shit on an emptier stomach.

Funny, I'm more worried about the cats who know (of) me, than strangers, too. I literally only kick it with one cat in my AO (hence "Flo' Dolo"), but a couple of my in-laws are grade-a sheisty muthafuckas. They know I don't go for the okey-doke, but fools always wanna come tes'... Other people I come in contact with speculate and gossip, but their eyes haven't had the opportunity to confirm their gum-bumpin' speculations. Sometimes peeps get the ass face cuz I'll come up front to see them instead of letting them in my "sweetspot." Fuck em. I already got homies around the globe, dogs in the yard, and a dime in my bed.
I'm no stranger to tellin' people "no," and many think that I do shit far removed from makin' tracks. They all know I dj, all sweat me for tapes and CDs, and I don't even serve em up like that. Fuck em. They hear me on the wheels in my shop (IF I keep playin' when customers come through the door), and my earth's homies may hear a CD if I hook somebody up with one for their bridal shower/bachelorette party type shit (only happened twice). They all burn copies, but that's cool they are more than welcome to swing on my nuts.

Other producers and engineers in my area wanna get at me, but I simply don't fuck with them. Life is too short, and my revolving credit is way too long. I mean, what I do is no secret, but my business is my business. I'm as careful as I can be, and I never let cats who do come 'round bring anybody with them if they aren't mission critical. No girls, no runnin' buddies, no "my man is tryin' to get down on the mic, too," nothing. If they gotta cat who they wanna use to put cuts on something (i won't do it - "you ain't got no money, you ain't got no beats/cuts"), then he comes AFTER the track is finished. None of that chilling shit, even though I've got a nice little room to chill in (not the control room) complete with ps2, bar, and toys for (MY) kids... If somebody gets me, they gotta come widdit. I even peep the AO outside before I leave the joint.

You can never be too careful, especially in a residential situation. I can't wait to start training with my new dog... I pray I don't ever have to let him loose on someone, or come in my shop to find somebody's ass chunk bloodying up the floor, but if it is the Creator's will, so be it. All day every day.

Stay as safe as you can. Treat your studio like you'd treat your kid. That's all you can do, but if that's TRULY all you can do, then you can't do no more to keep shit in order. If you get hit in spite of that, then you was supposed to get hit. At least you can sleep the night after knowing you handled your bizzy to the fullest.

<sorry these last 2 posts have been so long, these 22s got me kinda lippy>

good lookin' out fellas!!!!!!

Lazi,Flo dolo...
good look on your concerns......flo',you right it is "so hard to say goodbye to yesterday"...........
Lazi,I saw that pic of your studio son and I'm feelin' the hell out of a storage unit....I might bite your idea!

Raticus...I was reading up on that Layla24.....nice!!
I'm thinling about coppin' it soon....either that or the maudio delta 1010,even that terratec ews88mt looks good....
that Tascam us 428 thing ...is that an actual mixer or does it just control things in your software like eq,panning,fx etc. so you don't need to use a mouse?
I'm leaning towards a digital mixer...damn them things are pricey but hey!

If I went the analog mixer way though I would get either that mackie 1202 vlz or the mackie dfx12.......actually critique this hypothetical setup for me dun.....

Cool Edit Pro 2.0
Mackie 1202 or DFX12
Layla 24

good lookin' out

..........................one......................

That setup would work.... But unless you have some outboard gear running everything to the Mackie for mixing will limit what ya can do....
As for the US 428 it is what ya said it elimates about 65% use of the Mouse... But it is a little toyish to me....
I personally am saving up for a digital board like the new Yamaha 02r96.....

ANd I just read about the DIGI 002 board looks real nice....

a'ight PGM here i am sitting all smug and secure knowing that if i ever get jacked it won't matter because i have insurance on my gear...

and then i read your post about the insurance company trying to low-ball you.

my insurance company tried to lowball me over some vinyl siding so you know they would try to pull some bull over a couple of thousand worth of gear.

a couple of years ago i was chllin' in the alley behind a music studio in downtown DC when this crackhead f**ker came walking up trying to sell an Oberheim. I thought about buying it but i just couldn't bring myself to do it knowing that he probably robbed it from some poor keyboardist car.
