Another Newbie....

Im about to make the plunge to a home studio. Any advice on specific equipment would be greatly appreciated. This is what I want to do. I would like to record guitar, bass and a drum machine and perhaps add a mic down the road. The music is metal and I would be playing all of the instruments. I have a P4 1.8 w/512MB, a 20GB app drive and a 80GB data drive. I just dont know which input/output device to go with or which software would be best. I have been looking at the Tascam US-428, the Delta66, the Digidesign Mbox or the C-Port DSP2000. I have no clue on which software to use. Any input would be great. I've looked at all the softwares and I've found cool edit to be the easiest, and most complete.. not to mention easy on the budget.

I still haven't upgraded my sound card to a delta, but for now you can just use the 1/8 in line in of your sound card... The quality sucks balls but it works.

For software.... there is many options. I personally prefer Cakewalk Sonar 2.0 xl... others like Cubase and N-Tracks. You will need a better sound card. Of the ones you've listed the delta 66 would be my pick. You will also need a preamp if you want to use a mic. An m-audio audio buddy is an inexpensive solution. Eventually you will be wanting a mixer... Mackie's are my personal fav.... There is lots to learn..

if your budget can afford it, i wound use pro tools.

Gear wise you should consider a solid soundcard like the delta 1010 that offers multiple in's and out's. Carpet crawling sucks. A small mixer is a plus, I use the carvin SM162. Lets me plug in 16 channels and route to my hearts content

Software:
Cooledit pro is user friendly and excellent to adjust to the PC recording learning curve.

Vegas is also fairly cut and dry.
