another newbie question...sonic maximizers and mic pre-amps

Sorry if I'm getting annoying, but I have a couple more questions...

Sonic Maximizers...How useful are they? How much do they improve your sound by? Oh yea, I can get a stereo non rack unit for 50 bucks, if that helps.

AND

Pertaining to mic pre-amps...Do I need these as well? I'm using a Sennheiser mic, currently, and it sounds...decent. I run it through my guitar processor though, for reverb, compression, EQ and the like. But I was wondering how much this would really help, and would it be worth it? I can get one of these for 90 dollars, OR a "multi-unit" type thing with mic pre-amp, feedback killer, noise reduction and compressor for 70. (It's the beringer shark). What, if any, should I get?
 
IMHO, stay away feom Sonic Maximizers. I've heard more shit mangled by them. There's really nothing a maximizer can do that you can't do with EQ and good engineering practices.
A mic pre on the other hand is something you definately should have. I don't care for the Behringer stuff my self ut it's better than nothing. Take a look at the DBX mini mic pre.
 
Scooby, I've found the bbe "effect" to be handy for if you're using it to brighten up a
cassette tape, as that medium tends to dull higher frequencies. If you get a bbe unit,
as a rule of thumb, be very moderate in applying any (3 db or less).
If you're playing live, the bbe can be used to help tweak the sound system a little.

I have a BBE,I used to use it in acoustic guitar,seemed to make it sound fuller.
I agree with TrackRat,get the best Pre you can afford and a good mic.
I have the DBX minipre,really nice unit for the price.

i have learned over the years to use the bbe only a little bit, i did some drum production and used the bbe on the kicks and sounded great, i could really make them cut threw the rest of the drum mix. Or use it on the entire drum mix, depends on the kit. this drummer had a dull sounding kit so i could add lows or highs to make it sound better(to me). I got bbe in my stereo system, it gives those bassy cd's some life.
Ive also used it in my guitar rack/ but only alittle bit, to much sounds shitty.
 
As you can see, most of the posters who own BBE's use them extremely sparingly!!! Why waste money on an item that you will only use very little! Just get it RIGHT during your original recording
and you won't have any need for this item!
