just setting up the bells and whistles i'll need to get my home studio underway-reading about the neccesitites for condernser mikes for vocals and the like-and just when im about to set off to buy my four tracker I come upon another problem-my keyboard-YAMAHA PSR-280-comes only with two outputs and theyre both midi outputs.
so my question then is obvious:what type cable do I need to record to an analog 4 tracker?will the sound be crummy or can I achieve good sound?can the output from the yamaha headphones be used to the line in on the four tracker?(I doubt it-lol)any ideas guys?hope to hear from you veterans out there.thx in advance.

Your midi connections are most likely midi-in and midi-out, take a closer look. For your audio output you can use the output for the headphones but try using a stereo jack from the keyboard. How you hook it into the 4 track depends on the options for inputs into the 4 track. If you have a stereo line in to the 4 track that would be ideal. If not you could use a Y splitter cord, stereo out from the keyboard and 2 mono inputs into channels of the 4 track. You may get away with using just a mono jack from the headphone jack into a single channel of the 4 track. You may also have to use a pre-amp to get a good recording level and then again maybe not, but either way it won't hurt to try. I use a mixer in between that has pre-amps and it's a pretty decent sound.

Welcome to the board!

thx morningstar

good to hear ill be able to use the phones/output form the keyboard.thx also for the welcome to the board.I'll follow your advice because im trying to stay away from recording the keyboard from mike sources as I fear background noise. The phones output is for 1/4 cables-anybody know if gold plated jacks are superior to the regular silver plated ones?(as far as sound reproduction).
geez I ask a lot of dumb questions but hey-if u dont ask you dont learn-lol.
Thanks again for your "input".

Gold plated jacks are becoming a fashion nowadays actually if you look in Physics "Silver conducts much better than Gold" but the reason to go for Gold is that, Silver easily gets mixed with impurities and loses their conductivity as days go by. Just because the tip of the cable is gold plated, it doesn't mean the whole cable is gold plated, most of them use copper inside them. So Gold plated cables makes no big difference than regular cables in home recordings, to be on the safer side get a gold plated quality cable :)

I was reading an article about the OEM vs retail Audigy2. The dude said the retail had gold plated jacks but it was mostly to make it look pretty as it didn't make any difference in the sound. In general, cables that are gold plated might be of a little higher quality, but the gold plated connectors themselves don't really make any difference. Just get good solid sheilded cables. I figured this out when I went out and bought a bunch of cheapest of cheap Radio shack cables once, and it was ground loop/buzz-o-rama. Nicer cable made a noticable difference in how much buzz/interference I had out of the thing. As a side note the lady that lived below me would get pissed because my "studio" would ruin her TV reception when I turned it all on... :D Not sure if that was Radio Shack's fault or not though. Somewhere I had a pic of all the power strips cascaded to the same outlet with a ton of stuff hooked up. Fire Marshall said no f*(kin way...

thx again guys.
