Alright fellas I'm back with another one. This is another mellow track, pretty simple actually. Just something I put together pretty quickly last week. Do you think this is too simple? Normally, I usually will have 6 - 8 tracks going, whereas this is only 4. I'm just trying to get a gauge on a few things and feedback would definitely be helpful.

Let me know.

No. It's not too simple. I like this beat.

Only thing I would have negative 2 say about it is the trumpets or whatever you use sound a little off (may just be the instrument or could be the notes - or maybe I just have a picky taste:D)

Really digging the chorus here - really like that instrument u add 2 it.

Oh, and I've got my nowhere radio site up now:

Hasn't got tha new drum beat on it though. I'm gonna add more kick an' make it more memorable. Myabe I just need 2 change tha kit?

Abyyss,

As always man, thanks for the listen. I think I know what you're talking about as far as the trumpet like instrument. That's a pad with a relatively slow attack so maybe you're hearing it hit a little after the beat. I was going to shorten the attack, but I thought the delay added a nice vibe. I'll try it with a quicker attack. Also thanks on the hook instrument, that's my baby. That is actually my main bass patch that I tweaked out and layered. Experimentation leads to some cool shit sometimes.

I was actually cruising around Nowhereradio this AM and I found your site. I was going to send you an e-mail to ask you about it, but I got tied up with work. I didn't listen to the track there yet.

So you're still trying to make changes to the drum pattern? Well, first what are you producing on? Secondly, I don't think changing the kit is going to really help here. It's the sequence that needs changing.

Listen to my beat right here for instance. Hear how the hi-hat (the chick-chick type sound) is pretty much continuous and the snare (the crack or whip like instrument) is pretty much keeping a consistent rhythm? These are very important elements as they keep the song moving regardless of what the other instruments may be doing. Also listen to the kick and see how it follows the bassline and reinforces it? This is another very important element as the kick and bass drive the song.

Your bassline is pretty consistent on your track so I would say just keep the kick simple, maybe just a very basic beat. For now just use an 1/16th note pattern for the hi-hat and have the snare fall on 2 and 4. You can get more creative from there, but I believe this will give you a solid foundation to work from.

If you need clarification let me know and also let me know what gear you're using.

I have actually got the hi-hat all the way through the drum beat, it's just that it means that it's following the same pattern as the low piano notes. As for kicks, with this drumkit it's almost impossible 2 hear them even at full volume, but I'll still put 'em in and see what you think. (Oh, an' u don't need 2 explain what each part of tha drum is - I started learning drums quite a while back, but quit 'coz the teacher were rubbish. So I can pretty much play basic drums, no way as good as a pro. like urself of course:D)

As for the equipment I'm using. I'm basically using Cubasis VST 3.0 (you can find exact info. at Steinburg's site) and a microphone. It isn't a flash microphone, wasn't that expensive - lemme see... probably works out 'bout $50 or so (sorry, I'm using £) but I'm always tight on cash like that and I'm not gonna put a lot of money into a microphone until I've got summit 2 record onto. It isn't brilliant, but it's doing ok for now. And if it means anything I can also play and own a clarinet (yawn! But this means I could also pick up an instrument like a saxophone quite easily), a recorder (I bet no-one else can play this!), basics on a keyboard (taught myself) and I might be getting an electric guitar soon.

Abyyss,

Sorry if I offended you with the drum remarks, just wanted to make sure you knew what I was referring to. Suprisingly, the recorder is the first instrument I picked up when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. I can also play clarinet, sax and used to be able to get down with an oboe and bassoon as well.

I just recently purchased a recorder, but it's a tenor, which is not like a regular recorder, the freakin' thing is huge. It's a bit harder to play but can reach these deep low tones that just sound awesome, almost ethnic. You'll be hearing it soon as I plan on multisampling it and maybe even playing it live on some tracks.

Raticus,

Thanks for the listen, definitely appreciate it. The sound you're referring to is 3 sounds layered from my modules. It started out as my commonly used bass patch (which consists of 2 sine waves, 1 filtered and the other detuned slightly) and a flute with a slow attack. This isn't something I would think would work, but sometimes experimentation is the key to unlocking something you didn't think was possible.

No offence was taken. I just didn't want u wasting ur time explaining every bit of the way when I already know it. Believe or not I am quite a musical person, I just haven't produced before in my life or attempted 2 make a hip hop track.:D
