Another kid with another latency problem. Please help me out guys.

Ok, I record a guitar track, sounds great. I record another identical guitar track that sounds fine while im playing it along with the original. On playback they are about a half second off from each other. What do i do? I also noticed that when i move a volume fader down during mixing or do something else, it doesnt take effect for about 1 second. Thats annoying as hell.
Im running a Pentium 4, 1.3 ghz, with Windows XP, 256 mb ram, 40 gig hard drive, cubase vst 32. just tell me what buttons to press to fix this. thank you soooooooo much. gordon
 
you didn't mention the most important factor determining your latency: your sound card... if it's a consumer type card (built-in, SoundBlaster) don't expect anything better than 100ms, if it's a prosumer card (Echo, Delta, Aardvark,Terratec,...) it should be mucho lower.

If theyre half a second out on playback just move the trailing signal forward half a second in the timeline. Thats what i love about computer based recording. The ease of editing.
 
Yeah i would definetly not prefer doing that. I have a delta 410. Any clues as to what i can do to lower the latency, i can got it down to about 87 milliseconds today, but what is the easiest, normal way to lower it? What do i click on/type in?
 
I don't use the Delta line, but I thought that their latency was lower than that. First, I would go to their website and make sure that you have the newest driver installed for your card.

Second, go into your ASIO Control Panel in VST32 and adjust your buffering. In the "Getting Started" manual they outline how to do it right at the start. By adjusting your buffering you can get a lower latency. Delta is a popular line I would think you should be able to get it much lower than what it is at now. My aardvark runs at 4 ms latency and I never have problems with audio synching.

When I forst got my wave 8/24 I had 750ms of latency because I was using ASIO multimedia drivers so I could use both my Wave 8/24 and Audigy at the same time. I switched to the Gadget Labs drivers and now I have 12ms latency. The Audigy is hardly ever used now.

Check your using the right drivers and your using them properly.

Ok. Do I want my buffers to be bigger or smaller? and how many do i want?
 
I'm not at my DAW so I can't tell you offhand. It's been so long since I set mine up I don't remember. Just look it up in your "Getting Started" manual, it's right near the front and they detail it quite extensively.
 
The fewer and smaller your buffers, the lower your latency, but the more chance you will have of problems in your sound when recording, ie, pops etc.

Alright, im at 6 ms latency now. I just had to use my soundcards ASIO drivers, it was orginally set to Windows Multimedia ASIO. thanks for all of your comments and suggestions!
