another dumb newb question

using audio interfaces that are capable of recording multiple channels at once is a good thing.

but say i have a pci audio interface and a usb interface each can record two channels.
could i set up my daw to record two tracks from the pci card and two tracks from a usb audio interface to be able to record 4 tracks at once????
 
I have never tried with usb, but I have had bad luck expanding soundcards unless they are designed too. If your good with your computer I would say try it and find out.
 
well it doesnt necessarily HAVE to be usb...

im assuming that multitracking with multiple interfaces is possible cause my daw recognizes all inputs that are on my computer... including my soundblaster and this crappy usb device i have n whatnot.

im thinking the daw software should be able to record all the inputs i have seeing as it still recognizes that the hardware is there and it lets me arm multiple inputs for recording.

my only concern is that there is a chance the sound wont reach my DAW because you cant have multiple sound cards setup in the windows sound manager or whatever...

ill def. give it a try in the morning cause its a bit late now. ill update the thread in case anyone is interested??? maybe theres someone else out there who wants to multitrack on their pc without spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a really good interface.
 
usually only one sound car/interface is recognized at a time. Let us know if it works.
 
I only have experience with Cubase and Sonar and neither will let yo select more than one interface at a time.
 
im using mixcraft and it supports multiple interfaces.

it worked :D
 
I'm just wondering...effectively you're recording two SEPERATE tracks through two SEPERATE devices. How do you account for latencey, or the issue of precise time-matching? I think this will be you're biggest challenge. Good luck.
 
i never tried that. i didnt know the comp would recognize both at once
 
latency isnt really an issue for me.

but mixcraft lets me choose multiple inputs at once.

so if i had ten audio interfaces that recorded two channels each i could record 20 tracks at once. (assuming my PC could handle it lol)
