okay, I got a pearl brx masters kit during the summer and i have been dieing to start recording them. i dont know much about mics, and how they stand out against eachother for the differance in price, so thats why im asking. for christmas im looking to get some condensers as overheads, and some mics, or a mic kit. my kit consists of 1 bassdrum, 1 rack tom, 1 floor tom, snare, 1 ride, 1 crash, and 1 set of hi-hats. so its a very small kit, the tracks i want to capture are very straight foward to save room. its a lot of just bass drum/snare. i have two preamps, one 4 track mixer, a delta 44 card, and a 2 track 16 bit soundcard.

ive read the micing drums with 4 mics all over this board. although may like the ability to mic the toms though.

ive been thinking of maybe a mic pack, the audix dp182 with the I5 because i like the d6 and the i5, or maybe the shure pack with the 3 sm57s? can someone make some suggestions. i also need some overheads, can anyone make some suggestions there.

all in it would be best if its around or less than $600. thanks for your help in advance

can never go wrong with a handful of 57's, a couple over heads and a kick mic. i would go for the shure package that has all that for under $600 IMHO

I picked up the Shure pack with 3 SM57s and the Beta 52 kick mic. A solid investment I feel. You can mic up a buddys cab if he comes over and the 57s can be used as bludgeoning weapons if need be. By yourself, you have the kick, snare, and toms covered. Pick up a couple Oktava MC-012s and your there. $450 for the shure pack on sale and $200 or so (maybe less) for the Oktavas.

I just did a recording with the Shure package and I was very happy with the results. The only thing I did not like was the kick mic and replaced it with a beta 52

my own preference. two crown pzm's xy over kit.
snare and kik triggers to sampled snares and kiks.
peace.

oops, thanks for your advice all. i just realized i was in the wrong thread... im such a newbie. thanks again
