Another collab, sorta

This is my version of the Chris Harris song "Time to Leave" I left the arrangement the same, but I think I definitely changed the feel of it. I did, however, mix some of Chris and Toki's version into this in two little spots, one being the intro, because I liked how it was played and didn't think I could match it. So Chris hasn't even heard this yet, and has no Idea what I've been doing with his song. Mixwise, I need some help. I've only checked it on two systems so far and I think it's kinda midrangy. I think this is directly related to all the "smiley face EQ" comments my last post derived. Maybe one day I'll find the happy medium. Anyway, here it is, if anyone isn't tired of that damn Chris Harris.

Sounds really good to me. I think the guitars might be a little loud. Other than that really good.
The guitar sound is really good, but I think it fits your usual darker writing style better than this (or what I know as your writing style anyway). It's that spongy mesa rectifier sound. You could almost use something more trashy sounding for this - especially the chunk chunk chunk parts.

But you're on to something, because this sounds bigger than other mixes I've heard from you. And I've always like what you've posted.

Im listening lofi stream so I cant help much on the mix. But its a neat sound.
 
I couldn't tell if the guitars were too loud, or the vocals too soft, or what. I was definitely trying to bring a meaty, chunky guitar to it, and I may have gone too far. I also limited myself to only TWO guitar tracks. This is unheard-of for me. I can't believe I left the chorus's alone. Normally I would try to layer some little melody guits in there, but I wanted to keep this as simple as possible. Thanks for listening, guys.

I'll save the "thanks" for PM's, b/c I know how you look forward to those, lmao.

My favorite parts are the rhythm changes. You played it like I heard it, but was too lazy to actually DO (fucking drums). And the way you opened up the chorus...VERY cool.

Upstrokes...I used to be able to play those, lol. Good times, good times.

Actually, I really like the level between the guitars and the vocals, (I mixed mine like a bluegrass tune, lol...vocal just SOARING on top, so I added 2 more guitar tracks last night and turned all of them up, lol)...

I'm A/Bing it with mine to compare and contrast, and your guitars are just so much more "present," it's amazing. Not too midrangey to my ears, they're just very clear and defined...I hate you, lol.

..but I think the bass and drums need a push towards 0db...Maybe I'm just wanting more kick and bass. Or more definition on the bass...Obviously, I don't have a clue how this is achieved other than my new favorite method (ask Toki to play it, lol).

Dude, I have no idea why you would wanna' spend your time and talent on this, but I think it's very cool that you did.

If anybody else has the moral fortitude to listen to more me, see what they say about the EQ. My GUESS is that it may sound okay to turn everything but the brass on the kit up a couple of db, more on the kick if you can, then do a little mid scoop of the whole mix.

But it's a total guess, b/c the more I listen to this, the bigger it sounds. The git tone threw me for a few seconds when I first heard it, but man...I'm liking it a ton now...ESPECIALLY when I A/B it against what I used, lol.

I'm uselessly rambling. I like it a ton, and I'm gonna' totally lie to everybody and say that those are MY guitar tones.

Any problems syncing that vocal track up? Sounds spot on to me.

im downloadin this mutha right now.....and feeding the baby ....this BETTER be good ...cause my time is MONEY.....


...sweet heavier guitars.....MY FAVORITE!...the drums dont sound so contrived anymore...i like that pause-like guitar part right as the chorus ends...wow its amazing how much the drums make a difference this way....the mix might need the vocal to come up a bit to compinsate for the louder guitar parts....but i would rather listen to the guitar than that crappy-ass vocalist anyway..3:30...BRING THAT LITTLE LOW GIUTAR PART UP...

yeah that halftime guitar part works really well...

Chris: Glad you like it, man, I was wondering. I don't know how I would feel if someone took one of my songs and changed it all up. I enjoyed this because it's fun to play. It's the only song I've recorded that two guitars live could pull off. I've usually got like Five guitars in my chorus's.
Jamal: Thanks for the listen. I wasn't sure about the vocal level, I wanted to drive the song, and I could still make out all the words, but I didn't know if that was because the level was high enough, or because I've heard it so damn much.
