In the swamps of Jersey
This is for those on a tight budget. I was buying some mics at Sam Ash and saw these really cheap MXL SP 1 mics. They were $59 each so I bought 2 for kick arounds. At that price they could be used as door stops but much to my surprise ( and I know I'll get slammed for saying this) they ain't bad. They made nice overheads on a live durm recording with just them and a kick mic. We put them on an acoustic and got a nice transparent sound. Even did a few percussion overdubs with them. Now they are on sale 2 for $99. I know they are just "crap" mics but for this price, with many of us on a budget, it's a cheap way to get 2 matching mics. And yes I do have a pair of 603's and B1's but this is still under $100.
Peace

I've had a good experience thus far with my MXL v93........i think they are pretty solid mics for the price

MCA SP1 mics $99/pair?

zbert, I researched the monthly Sam Ash flyer for Oct 02 and the www.samash.com site... I could only find MCA SP1's for $99 each.
Did you find the "pair" price at your local Sam Ash store?

In the October, 2001 mail-out flyer, the MCA (not MXL - that's a misprint) SP1 microphones are TWO for $99.99, but the ad is messed up, with the wrong part number and everything.

I just called them and confirmed. It is the MCA SP1 2/$99.99, the same microphone as on this page.

There seems to be plenty of room for an order screw-up on this, so make sure you call and get it right with someone who's awake.

MCA SP1 mic $99/pair

It took awhile, but I finally got the samash.com magazine listing the MCA SP1's with the wrong part number for $99 a pair. I remember seeing this mic on sale for $59 before and being scared off by the mic response curve... hardly linear. If they work well in actual use, perhaps they'd be worth the risk, blister-pack packaging and all. I want to try Scott Dorsey's Recording magazine/Kludge Audio retrofit electronics mod on them (if the pcb fits).
