Another cable test

Hey all,

I guess the Mars Music where I live (Baltimore) is pretty cool, 'cause every Saturday at 2PM they have a "Producer's Pizza" deal. Basically, local engineers and producers can come in, eat free pizza, and mingle/network/share trade secrets. It's pretty cool.

Anyway, today one of the employees had set up a cable test for the meeting. He had a loop running on some standalone DAW (forget what it was) with two Yamaha NS-somethings as monitors. The right side of the loop was recorded and connected to the monitor with Rapco cables, and the left side had Monster Studio Pro 100s. So, with just a turn of the pan knob you could switch between the two, and let me tell you, the difference was quite noticeable. The Rapco side sounded like the loop was coming out of a cheap Rat Shack speaker; a very muddy indistinct low end and a much reduced high end. The Monster side had a very defined low end and a much higher frequency range (or at least the highs were clearer and more distinct).

So, I just wanted to share my personal experience with this ongoing Monster Cable vs. Cheapo Cable debate. If any of you are in the Baltimore/Catonsville area, go check it out. They still have it set up next to the Monster Cable display. Oh, and stop by the Producer's Pizza thing, too, even if it's just for the free food.

Question. In my opinion If you take apart a monstercable, analyze its jacks, cable wiring,
soldered connections and shieldings,can't the
same be replicated at a much lower cost by
duplicating the same procedure via the purchase of these parts at a reputable electronics store(besides Radio Whack)? Many times a cord went by and at the last minute I had to put together a workable solution. But
in one's free time I beleive this can be done. Just my opinion. (besides I'm bored as hell rite now :( )

Misterqcue,

Yeah, a lot of people on this BBS say they make their own cables, and they all say that the cables are of excellent sonic quality and can be made at a very low price.

Monster Cables, however, have all of this fancy stuff that I guess would be hard to replicate, like oxygen sealed this, and gold plated that, and (to quote from their website) "multi-gauge Bandwidth Balanced® wire networks and Time Correct® windings" and "MicroFiber® dielectric [which] employs an intricate process of winding an air-core fiber around each individual conductor to reduce dielectric losses and electromagnetic distortions", etc, etc. Whether or not this is a bunch of crap is debatable, but there is no doubt that the cables do sound better than less expensive brands.

So, I guess you either fork out the big bucks and know for a fact you're getting the best sound, or you make your own for less and hope that they match up. I'm still not sure which to do either, to tell the truth. Maybe someone on here can do a Monster Cable/ Homemade Cable comparison.

I think that we're all firmly convinced that Monster cable outperforms the cheap stuff. The real $6 million questions are:

1) How do the different grades of Monster cable (100s, 500 & 1000s) compare head to head? That is, is the performance worth the steep price differences?

2) How does Monster cable compare to other reputable brands, like Mogami, Belden, Canare, etc?
