Yikes. On Despair, those harmonies on 1:14 really suck. And your struming technique really needs som work on Rag.

NOT ! ! ! Brilliant work. I'm not worthy of criticism of any of this.

Sounds great. I love the mellotron and reverse stuff. Do you use a mixer for mixdown or do you do it all on a DAW? If it's a mixer what are you using?

The reason I ask is that your stuff sounds a lot fuller than most home DAW mixes.
 
Damn......I waited a week to here this on non-computer speakers and it didnt dissapoint. Absolute perfect pop-so much to catch your attention in the mix tasty guitar- keyboards-and the arrangement is top notch! As far as the recording-if you told me you recorded this at a big time studio-I would believe you. But what do I know? One of the best songs I've heard here yet.

You know there's lots of good tunes here in the clinic. I've been trying to give a listen to everyone. I haven't been at this game long enough to feel comfortable giving any "real" critiques. It is, however, very easy to compliment those of you that "get it". Macle, you not only "get it", you've got it. Yeah it sounds like the Beatles. It's also got the production values of the early Bowie/Ronson stuff. I've always loved this style of music. I think it was Tex that said your music was the "gold standard". I couldn't agree more. Thanks again for sharing with us.

TexRoadKill-Thanks! No, I don't use a mixer, it's all in Paris. A lot of people who use Paris claim it is a better sounding DAW, and I'd like to believe it's helping my stuff out, but I've never used another DAW, so I don't really know. Thanks Tex!

Stratomaster-Thanks a lot! Really appreciate your taking the time. You're big time studio comment is a great compliment, makes all the effort seem worthwhile (there have been many times of frustration, where I thought recording at home is a futile form of self torture!)

Macle, what are you using for your front end. What pres and convertors? What are you mastering to? Sorry if you've been asked this a bunch.
 
Vocals and belody are very Beatles-like. :) The drums sound good. No problems there. There's lots of nice little stuff here to listen to. Not too much to distract, so you've arranged this fine. So, in short: Just a great mix and a nice poppy melody with a bit more ambitious songwriting than usual.

TexRoadKill-Hi Tex, no problem. The converters are the Paris 24 bit converters, although I recorded this song at 16 bit. I'm not sure what you mean by "mastering to". If you mean the final mix down, I do that in Paris, a mixdown to a 24 bit file on the harddrive (I usually mixdown at 24 bit, but now that you bring this up, I'm wondering if I remembered to switch to 24, I may have mixed down at 16. Oh well.) The preamp is a Brent Averill API. Any other questions, feel free!

So do you do effects, reverb, and the like with plugins on the Paris as well? Or are those outboard? I've toyed around with a Paris before, and they are pretty nice.
 
Wow.

This sounds like it came out of Abbey Road NW; there's a George Martin touch to it. To think that sound like this is actually accessible from a home studio (well, add a little talent, I suppose) knocks my socks off. Tell us more! I'm lurking like a little technique sponge.

Keep in mind his signal chain is Rode NTK to API preamp to Empiracle Labs Distressor, so we're not exactly talking typical "sm57 to mackie to RNC" homerec setup here. :)

No outboard, I use the Paris FX (mainly, just a little reverb) and EQ, and also the Ren comp. I don't really like the Paris reverb, I'd really like to get a good reverb, or that UAD thing would be good.

The Waves' RVerb is kind of wearing on me, as well, save for a few of the presets. I've heard nothing but glowing reviews about the UAD.
 
Aside from the Beatles references, anyone remember the Rembrandts? (That's Just the Way it Is). One of my favorite pop bands. This sounds like it could have been right off of one of ther discs. Very hip tune. I loved it.
