mixmkr-Wow, thanks a lot! That's really a great review, especially since I thought you didn't really like what I was doing before (which is fine to not like it, but a couple comments, maybe I took what you said the wrong way, you weren't really knocking me directly, but it seemed between the lines, I don't know...  ). Anyway, I agree about developing beyond the Beatles thing, I think some of the songs move beyond that, but I did go a bit overboard. Long story, but I did that cuz when we first made a couple demos, I think my girlfriend's voice combined with other elements gave people the wrong impression, so I sort of wanted to make a stand (this is a band inspired by things like Beatles!, not a chick with a producer.) Thanks again, very much!

mkg (Mark)-Thank you! Very glad about your comments on the innocent quality and the sense of humor, etc. I always try to put a sense of humor into things, some more obvious than others, but lots of little jokes or double meanings that may not be apparent, which, of course, The Beatles did so well. Regarding the mastering, really looking forward to that, to see what sort of improvements can happen! Thanks again.

leahkim-!niaga olleh ( ) Thank you very much. Yes, that bass is quite Lucy In The Sky. I had a couple of other basslines in that part that weren't so obvious, but I thought, oh why not! :p :) Looking forward to your next one, btw.

Fangar-I wonder if it's overcompression? I was try to get a compressed sound, and maybe I overdid it (I was also trying to use Paris's soft saturation, which I had never done before). Thanks very much for the feedback!

Riku-You are a man of few words, but they are always good ones! Thanks! I guess I meant the beginning of the end, or, no, the end of the beginning...

Buffalo Bob-even fewer words, but just as good! Thank you.

TripleM-Thanks, I really appreciate it! Your comments regarding structure, harmonies, doodads, etc., really glad you notice that stuff. Regarding the lyrics, I hear what you're saying. All these songs were written a bit hastily a while ago, and some are worse than others, and I've been trying to improve and salvage. A couple, I really wanted to change or drop, but... plus, we were going for something just kind of catchy and fun, though, hopefully, not overly cliche (this one, I actually kind of like).... But I appreciate your feedback greatly, and hope to improve. Thanks a lot!

nice happy pop tune..

I agree with all the positive comments..

Don't lose the girl.. I lost the girl and now listen to my music.. I used to sound just like you two!!

:D

nice tune!

sam

Whoa! What can I add? This is so good! So fun to hear! I love the beatle-esque thing here. Really, its more the Spirit of recordings like Revolver that I hear. You are experimenting with texture using a fine song. Listening to this, I feel like the future of music may be reborn--if people like you have anything to do with it. Musically, its a knockout!

My only criticism is that the whole thing sounds like it lacks a tiny bit of warmth and presence--but I think what I am hearing is to be blamed on MP3 conversion. I wish I could hear this right off the master, if you know what I mean. And this is a very tiny criticism because the song, the performance and the mix all seem just right. You really lifted my spirit with this one! Excellent work!

Screw me, mackle! I converted your Mp3 to aiff and messed with it through some different plug ins. I finally decided that it sounds best just like it is!

I did have one thought. The piano and several of the guitars are in the same register (playing in the same range) which causes them to fight a bit for sonic space. The drums, bass and vocals all seem to find their own sonic area. An inversion up or down on a couple of the other instruments might make them pop out a bit more.

But, like I said, screw me. This is a great piece of work as is. I only wish I could do this kind of stuff. My comments are just food for thought and nothing more. This is really good music. Made my evening, actually!

Macle - We do suffer the lack of words here in Finland....(but in Finland we drink more :D ) Words are often overestimated in this world. There are a lot of other ways to express your feelings (like drinking) The main point of my longest thread ever... is that I like your tunes and you must keep them coming. There is now end for music.

I (almost) love this BBS it is so cool to come here every now and then and check out what you guys been up to.

Thanks Macle and others too...

Riku

great tune macle...one of my favs of yours definately.

i find the melody in the chorus to be totally infections...and I think "too pop" is kind of a compliment ;) this is a great chorus...

at this point...I am totally wanting to see you guys live. This song sounds a bit more stripped down even than some of the others...I think really a macle and max acoustic set would really be something worth seeing...I'd fly out to cali for it - let me know when you start gigging :)

and if you are trying to get a band together let me know when the auditions are, I'd love to play this stuff :) ...killer song...killer album.

I personally don't make that big of a fuss about record labels or whatever. I think if you could get some initial exposure to this project though....who knows...it could end up on like Spin magazine top 10 of the year albums. You know how they love to pick the obscure (but really good) album that only 5% of thier buyers have heard of...for like 6 of the top 10. And, when you are on that list you are gauranteed about 100,000 extra sales. Like that "Langley School Music Project" thing...the elementary school chorus that was recorded in the 70s by their teacher singing pop tunes of the time like beach boys and such.

best of luck

There is a definite "Lucy and the Sky" effect on the vocals. I'd like to use that myself. I'd appreciate any guidance on how to get that sound.

Thanks.

WOW

It's all I have to say!

BTW I do love the way the snare sounds

um.....this sounds perfect. feel kind of silly posting cause i have absolutely no constructive critism nor can i specifically say what i like. it just sounds perfect to me.

Sam-haha! I'll do my best not to lose the girl (I read these to her, and she says, "why does everyone think you're gonna lose me!")....I guess these last two are sort of happy songs. Funny, I think it was GT who said before, "don't you guys ever write anything happy?" I think songs like Despair and Fingerprints are nice and unhappy (though maybe not as miserable as yours!) :D

crawdad-Man, I like your reviews! Thank you very much. That really is great that you would take the time to mess with it! Could be the mp3ing, I was gonna use a better quality setting, but this song is longer than our others, so I thought it would be too long of a download. Regarding the piano and guitar thing, I agree, I always have a really hard time making piano fit in a full mix. I'd really love to get a real piano, and see how that would work.
Thanks again!! :)

Riku-Finland sounds like a great place! Less talking, more drinking, sounds fun. They should call it Funland! :D

Wes-Welcome back! Thanks very much, glad you like the tune. I like the fact that you think big. I'm excited if someone replies on this board, and you're talking Spin magazine! :D We've been sort of thinking of live stuff. Been practicing the songs just for fun, me on drums, Max on bass (slightly weirder than the Stripes). I think if we were to do live, I think the songs would be a bit more raucous. Will let you know. Right now we're gonna take a little break, maybe go to Funland! :D Thanks Wes!!

TripleM-There really is no effect, other than a little reverb. The leads have doubles, lower in volume, and the backgrounds are doubled. I think maybe what helps to make it sound a bit Lucyish, is sort of singing that way, and the chords. Thanks again, TripleM!

flapo1-Thanks. "WOW" is good enough for me! And I'm really glad you like the snare. Now I don't have to go back and fix it. :)

erichenryus-Thanks alot! I'm glad you posted, and I'd like to believe you're not silly at all! :D

max doesn't play bass on the album does she?

hehe...that sounds pretty cool...yeah...i could definately see you two screaming these songs out on stage like that...man, that would definately be stranger than the stripes....

I love it...

nono wait...I will tell you who would love it - Spin Magazine!

your album might make top 10...but, the next white stripes? bleh...thats cover material....throw the John Lennon specs on you...have max holding a green apple...yep...I see it now.

peace

Macle:

After 40 mins of waiting, I finally got to hear your new tune. Awsome!!!!! Too bad I have to listen to it on a really bad set of speakers (even comercial CDs sound bad on them), but, I still got to enjoy your music again :)
Really like the singing on this one, kinda makes me wanna swing around and dancing. Good job, bro!!!!

AL

Macle--I'm relieved! I have real trepidation about throwing in comments about music that is this good. In your case, it was just seeing if there was a way to squeeze the other 3% of perfection out of it. My comments were strictly from my enthusiasm--like I wish I was there for the mix--both to see what you do and to be another set of ears.

By the way, your voice is so damn perfect for this music--dare I say something so overused as "radio friendly?"

I finally found some things I think can be improved on.

Mind you, this is after several repeated listenings, grooving in my chair, dancing around to the catchy tune, etc.

* The vocals can get a little harsh at times and could use some de-essing. Listen around 1:15 for example. The "SH" in machine (I believe that's the word) is awfully prominent. I would be careful with the eq and whatever vocal mic you're using, because it's kinda' like that in more than one spot.

* You might want to redo the hand-clapping at the end. :) It doesn't sound very full - like there was too much bass cut out of it, and it's kinda' wimpy. :)

And those are the only gripes I could find in what has been one of the most thoroughly enjoyable tunes I've ever heard on the mp3 mixing clinic. Wow. Like I said in a PM not long ago, I want the CD when it's out. We have some really talented people here. Erland keeps cranking 'em out . . . and then there was that unbelieveable rendition of Kiss' Parasite not too long ago by Guernica and Lt. Bob. And now this. Wow.

"Don't you know you're only . . . lighting your own flame." :)

All I can say is... Wow.

If I could write/perform/engineer/produce just one song like this one... I could die a happy man.

Geeze, I can't even find anything to criticize. (Ok, maybe the toms sounded a bit weak. But GEEZE).

Can I have some of what you're on??

Fab

Everything sounds great to me, sounds a little like Owsley and Jellyfish (both I like very much).
What equipment were you using during recording?
Is it a home recording or did you go to a studio?
I wanna hear more songs from you. Let me know when Sony release it.. :)

Wes-No she doesn't play bass on the recordings, but she's getting better all the time. Cool thing is, she's learning the basslines note for note, even little things I do that are sort of imrovisations. I'll tell her, that on certain parts, she can just do the basic move, it doesn't have to be absolutely exact, but she wants to learn it exact! Which is great, really, cuz I hate it when people start changing everything! :)

AL-It's really wild that you're listening to this song that I made here in my house, all the way in Taiwan! Glad you could get the song, and glad you like it, thanks very much!

crawdad-Hey, I appreciate your comments greatly. That's what makes this board such a good thing. Different sets of ears. And your enthusiasm is fantastic. Don't know if you saw my reply to you on the last song I posted (Future), but I really loved your review on that. You hit the nail on the head of what I'm trying to do. And thanks very much for the vocal comment, that means a lot to me.

chessrock-Thanks for pointing out those things, I'll check into them. I got your PM, it's really cool that this song grew on you. We don't have a CD yet, but maybe I'll put up a few other songs for you to check out (hopefully the site won't go down!) Thanks again!

Fab4ever- Thanks very much! Right now, I'm on a little bit of caffeine. :) I'm guessing from your name, you're a FabFourFan, so I appreciate your comments that much more!

trucken-Thanks! This is recorded at home, in my bedroom. The gear is: Emu Paris, Averill API preamp, Rode NTK, Distressor, Gigasampler, Martin DM acoustic, Epiphone Casino (Korea), Fender Jazz bass (Japanese), Vellocette guitar amp, Yamaha Stage Custom drums. Thanks again, I'm gonna call Sony, and tell them to get on it! :)

Ok sorry about the dumb-ass newbie question. How in the Sam Hell do I download this tune? I've listened to it a mess of times and I still freakin' love it! I cannot figure out how to download it so I can play it through the "big system" (maybe I'm not s'posed to?).

Wow. Dreams of this kind of result are why I'm screwing around with the goddamn computer in the first place!

I didn't think it turned out right, so I did it over.

Famous last words uttered by everyone at some point :D

Pretty fabulous; what's there to say bad about it? It's just the tightest. Girl vocalist sounds great. Everything sounds great, in fact. Those little synths (or whatever... strings) that peek in are brilliant. 2 more cents for your tip jar :p ;)
