Analog vs. computer dilemma....Help!

Hey hey. I saw alot of posts about software and stuff and seems like your're all pretty well versed. Wonderin if y'all could give a Newb some pointers?

Bought a Tascam 44 mkII for pretty cheap, im now thinkin for my goals (making beats, using mostly computer but also w/ the ability to record and add inst. - guitar, bass, etc) that i'll need software, etc.

Is this analog rec. completely worthless for this purpose? I mean should i sell it and use themoney for software/hardware, etc., or can i integrate in and foind some legit use for it?

Also, whats the minimum i could get away w. for ease of use, cost, yet decent quality, to start gettin the hang of rec w/ my laptop? I have anIBM thinkpad series w/ min requirements to run a rec. system.

Please fellas, HELP!!! Anything you guys can throw back (names, price, places to buy from, etc)!

for starters

1-get a good soundcard and some recording software. you can go pro tools mbox for 500.00 or any one of the many other soundcards [m-audio,tascam,motu,etc.] + sonar, cubase, logic, etc.
2-get the book for the software, not the manual but a 'how-to-in layman terms' book. prob from borders etc.
3-get busy recording and making a few mistakes.
4-keep recording but dont make the same mistakes!!!!!!
5-get a pro to lend an ear if possible.

use your four track! I start almost all my beats on a four-track and then sample them into the computer. fourtrack=instachunk. serious. computers are useful but dont chump your fourtrack.
