Our band records ideas, riffs and the start of new songs on my Tascam Porta02mkII. They are rough recordings that I like to convert to mp3s, so we can listen to them to generate ideas and "clean up" our songs.

I currently use the RCA outs to plug the Porta02 into my computers sound card (SB16). I use Cool Edit 2000 to record the tracks/recordings to a digital format (.wav). I then attempt to edit this file to remove the hiss and other annoyances.

Here's my problem, the hiss reduction in Cool Edit SUCKS! It randomly inserts these chimes and dings. So when you listen to a song, these chimes and dings appear throughout the recording. It sounds like someone is playing a xylophone. I cannot get rid of these dings. I posted a question on this issue in the Cool Edit forum and it seems to be a common problem.

My question is, does anyone have any other software suggestions? Something with good hiss reduction for the large amount of hiss the Porta02 produces. The reason we use the Porta02 is because it's light, cheap and we can bring it anywhere.

Thanks.

Scott

You cant polish a turd. Ditch the Porta if you want clean sound.

if you have a vst program i find steinberg de-hisser to work well on things that have a lot of hiss.

TexRoadKill... I think you got this weeks award for funniest mother fucker on the BBS. Your statement wasn't deeply researched nor ellegant in it's linguistic delivery. But I fucking fell off my chair at it's delivery.

"Can't polish a turd..." Fucking words to live by my friends. Words to live by.

:D
