well thanks for all the feedback kids!

I agree with Bruce....My present pipe dream is to get a high-end Studer, Ampex or Otari or whatever multi-track recorder but I panic to think of the cost!

The replies here have said that I should work with analog right from the start to get that magic sound, so those studers excite me though would they require a lotta maintenance?

David Artis, you suggested an hdr from Mackie and Tascam which was my original plan. But I'm also wondering bout hi-end D/A converters. D'you think those things are really worth their salt?

robin, if and when I bag one of those reel to reels it'll probably be a
4 track and just dump those (4) tracks directly into a multi-track DAW
for mixing/editing. The maintenence, tape, and cost for that reel to reel
will be much less than an 8 track on up.
Way down the road though...
