analog emulation...??

i have been tinkering with the idea of getting some emulation plug-ins or possibly neve outboard emulator i have found online.. question is, has anyone messed around with this stuff to know if it makes a big enough difference to spend $700+ or does anyone know where i can hear an A/B of one? thanx, dan

Before you pay the big bucks, mess around with stuff like the free Ferox tape simulator, or the Isotope Vinyl simulator. All freeware.

I wouldn't pay big bux either. Distortion is a simple effect and is easy to do well. Here's my take on tape sims:
