Hey guys. I want to mess around with doing some digital recording. I am an avid analog recordist but, just want to learn new things. I have a compaq presario desktop computer, using factory soundcard as I just want to dable, reaper, a small 8 channel Radio Shack mic mixer (analog), and several different mics. What I really need to know is can I run the analog mixer into the line in on the front of the computer ( i know it would only be stereo ) or is the front inputs digital only ??

If you run a mixer into the stereo inputs on the computer, you'll miss the main benefit of digital recording, which is using a software mixer (aka DAW) with all of its built-in processors and editing capabilities. You'll be wanting a multi-channel audio interface to take advantage of those features.

Yeah, you can use what you have as front end and mix in the box with Reaper. The stock sound card and the Rat Shack mixer as a mic preamp won't give you great results but it'll work.

thx guys. i just want to mess with digi a little bit. i wouldn't give up my analog for digital but just want to try it.
