somebody just gave me an akai reel to reel recorder. its pretty old. it also records to 8 track. what can this thing do? is it any good? im pretty clueless when it comes to og recording.

Does it record? Does it play back? If so, it is a good machine. It's possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

*slaps forehead* (Good one pg :D)

It's junk... Better send it to me so I can dispose of it properly.

Wow,I also have an Akai reel to reel.I dont know if mine even works(I had offered it to Otter). So could this thing actually be decent for mixdown?I think its from the 70's

I may be time to put reel to reels out to pasture.

I get much better sound recording on my HiFi VCR, than I got on my Teac 3440 running at 15ips. The VCR is much cheaper and takes up much less space. Biggest improvement noticed on acoustic guitar no flutter, no tape hiss, more headroom. Go figure!!
