alright.....so now i've at least figured out what i'm doing when it comes to eq and cutting things into a song, etc. etc.

BUT - i've had a huge mix of opinions when I ask people which version of the same song they like better (an EQed version vs. a NONEQed version) - it's basically been 50/50 for each one.

Sooooooo - now i'll ask the pro's. What is better!?! I mean, which would be ideal for most people's home stereos, or headphones, or computer speakers, etc. Which one of the 2 would satisfy the needs of all?

Here is the link:

they are both 256kb mp3's, and are a little over 7MB (you dont have to listen to it all if you don't want to download it!).

Also - the song DOES get pretty heavy in the middle of it, so sorry if you dont like screaming.

I REALLY REALLY AM LOOKING FORWARD TO EVERYONE'S RESPONSES!!

the EQ'd version by a long shot.

Without EQ it loses a lot of character and clarity...

the guitars have a little more bite, the vocals definately cut through better and sit better.

pretty nice work here.

(i listened on my headphones by the way...but, thats what i listen to music on all the time, so..there ya go.)

The unEQ'd version sounds muddy, but that is simply the way it was mixed......

The EQ'd version sounds grainy and shrill - you either over-EQ'd it, or the EQ you're using is not very good.

Of the two, I prefer the unEQ'd version -- but I don't think you did the mix justice.

Keep in mind that clarity in a mix doesn't come from EQ as much as proper track management, arrangement, and balance.

well, bruce knows 10 times as much as i do....hehe...for once, post count may be relevant! :)

yeah...didn't sound grainy on my headphones...but, thats what listening headphones will do for ya.

i see your point on clarity (and raise you a..) hehe, j/k...but, to a point i think EQ does. like, carving out a notch for the kick or whatever...but, you are certainly right.

On my end of the mp3 playlist though, the eq would still be in rotation over the other.

Yeah...I'm guessing you used a Mackie (like one of 'dose 24x8 or 32x8 thing-a-ma-jigs):D  :D :D :D ......maybe even tracked on some ADATs:eek:   :p

I'd try running the entire mix thru a pair of yammie ns10's, pick it back up with a stereo pair of mxl2001's, compress with a 3630, master it in sound forge, and get ready to sign autographs...

seriously...the site was temporarily down...will check later...

"yeah..maybe I should have just said; Keep in mind that clarity in a mix doesn't come from EQ as much as proper track management, arrangement, and balance to be really funny.

geez Bruce, do you wear a friggin tie, when you type that tripe??
Just trying to make you loosen up a bit... (quote) (end quote)

tripe?????????? That's proper technique, dammit!!! ;)

Jeez - how loose do I need to be?? I spelled "funny" f-u-n-n-e-e -- what more do ya want!!!?!?!?

:D :D

One thing to add....

The EQ'd one does indeed sound grainy especially in the high end.

To me it sounds like you might be going about it wrong. There isnt much wrong with the unEQ'd one except its a bit muddy and maybe a bit dull. Try CUTTING rather than BOOSTING. Might help....I hope.

Pull out some of that roundness somewhere between 300 and 600 and boost a little in the 3k zone. Cut and boost only slightly.....go to where you think it should be and then go back a little. Try it a few times with your eyes shut and see if you hit the same spot twice. If you do...you like it there.

Keep in mind, I use these numbers as an example only....the real numbers will vary of course.

Trying to be of SOME help....feels kinda weird posting advice after dudes like Bruce though:cool:

i guess i'm gonna state the same "uneducated" opinion as wes480. i liked the eqed version. it has more clarity. isn't it funny that i also listened on earphones? maybe it just sounds better on earphones?!?!

hey man, you calling me uneducated! ;)

yeah, stuff always sounds good on headphones....i have sennheisers. they make some of my crap sound godlike...

hmmm well thanks guys.

i'm gonna try to get another mix together, keeping in mind what you guys said. in addition, I burnt a CD of the versions and checked them out on other speakers in my house/car/etc., and also noticed some really annoying things i'd like to change (aka WAY too much kick for me...ha).

i'll post on here next time i update the site once again.

MUCH better Scott, but I still find the mix murky -- too much stuff getting buried......

Bruce

yep yep....much better to me as well...

guitars are definately richer.

i really like this song...

Been following this thread, and really, I would compress the snare quite a bit, but that's just me. The newer EQ sounds quite a bit better. :)

Darth

sounds good. my only major gripe is the snare sound. try to eq/compress it to have more of a pop and snap. right now it sounds like the drummer is hitting a box of cornflakes rather than a hard-hitting snare drum. i like the breakdown a lot. it sounds like you guys slowdown a bit in the chorus after the breakdown though, or maybe the song looses a bit of energy. my suggestion would be to add another guitar part ontop of that chorus to take it to the next, more energetic, level. overall, it sounds well balanced and aggressive (over my 'phones!). good job.

song has a cool melody...

i was singing it in the shower after listening to it last night and came up with this pretty wicked bass line for the verse...i dunno, you might do it in the song and i just *thought* i made it up...have to listen later.

thanks guys, just want i've been looking for.

As for the snare problem - as of now i can't do much to that, the drums are all mixed to 1 track...

in the future i'll be getting my Delta 44 - and then we can talk snare...lol

thanks again. i'm sure i'll have some other songs up in the future, i'll just post a new topic for those later.

I've tried several times, and "still unavailable" was the site response......so I give up...even though I see others have had success. Just to let you know I tried more than twice...:(
