Hi All,

Remember the old, foot-stomping, everybody-sing-along type "repent sinner" songs you used to be able to hear at church gatherings and from Salvation Army groups?
Well....this is a bit of that, just in the opposite direction...think a major key, upbeat chorus,
old-fashioned chord structure...you get the drift.

THE MARCHING SONG.

1. They say that life is precious,
That each new day is good,
That everything will work out
If you do the things you should.
To that we give the finger,
We've found a better way,
With booze and drugs and hookers
Life's a party every day.

C. We're marching, marching, marching,
We're marching to the grave,
To daily strife and worry
No longer be a slave,
The gates of Hell are open,
Our names are on the stones,
We're marching, marching, marching,
We can't wait to rest our bones.

2. Our livers, they are bloated,
Our lungs are filled with coal,
Our brains are getting toxic
From snorting from a bowl,
The girls give us diseases,
We know, it all sounds sick,
But when you're ripped from sunrise,
It's just another kick.

Chorus.

3. We all tried to be normal,
To do the nine-to-five,
But none of us could stand it
And still remain alive,
Now, Heaven closes early,
Hell is open through the night,
There are many ways to get there,
We all took the early flight.

Chorus

Pause before last line of chorus, and sing line slowly with dragged-out ending.

@2005. C.H.

Hi Sawken,

Having never heard Minor Threat, how would they approach this?

Best,

They were a hardcore band from the 1980s who helped start the straightedge movement- they are from you home town.

So, find two chords, strum them really fast and scream.

I like the idea of doing it as a roots kind of thing, though. Have you ever listened to the 'Hard Times Come No More" series of early recordings? They were extremely earnest recordings done in the 1920s and 1930s and they have more soul and sincerity than any band you will hear on the radio today. Someone singing about scrounging a living during the Depression will trump an overprivileged white male singing about his girlfriend dumping him.
