Ampex L03 chip - any idea what it is?

I guy I know with an interest in exotic ICs posted this:

...It's a 16-pin DIP made by Ampex in 1975. Does anyone happen to recognise it? For all I know it was part of a data recorder or a protoype 1" VTR or something, but I figured it was worth trying just in case...

Wow...never seen anything like that.

Its not out of a production audio machine.

I wouldn't expect its out of a video machine either, but who knows.

I put my money on something data related...Ampex did a fair amount of mil-spec stuff for aerospace applications...that's what I'm thinking.
