Ampeg 8x10"... What head to drive?

My buddy here is moving up from a Crate BX-160 combo to a Hartke 3500 head and a Hartke Pro Series 2x12 cab.

I'm hoping that'll be better, cause this crate pile of crap has pissed us off to no end...on every level =)

AMoeg 8x10

Why an SVT, of course. I had this rig for a couple of years. It melts your socks.

Not a really nice rig for guitar, it is really set up to move bass air. And amn, does it ever.

Serious bear to move though.

Thanks, guys.

Seeing as I've never played though it yet... how much power should I expect to require?

SVT 8X10 cabs can handle a lot more than your average cabinets. I use a SUNN1200s with mine and the Ampeg 8X10 is the only cab that can handle it (it's 1200W and has four separate outputs) the tone cracks concrete!

My god! Did you take that last post in the other thread personally?

I will not dignify that with an answer. Anyone here like Crates guitar amps?

I'll chime in. Actually I do like crate amps. not all of them,

But the Blue Voodo Stack and 2x12 combo is a sweet little amp for the money. Also the Vintage clubs were cool when they first came out in about 1995. Very Loud. I used to borrow a 2x12 vintage club from the store I managed for outings.

But the topic at hand....Oh yeah... Actually Ampeg does not make Crate, St. Louis Music makes both Crate and Ampeg.

Anyway that Cab you *Might* get is nice. I used to sell a ton of those, and the SVT head was a great match for it, like cmackg & charger mentioned.

I would recommend a nice Tube Bass Head of your price range of course.

Good luck. I hope you get the Cab.

The funny thing is that a Vintage Club and A Blue Voodoo are almost the exact same amp on the inside.

I would believe that. I liked the onboard distortion on both of them. The Voodoo seems to have a but more poop though.

Cheers.

i have a crate vc20, and i think it sounds every bit as good (if not better) than a fender of marshall competitor, but you can't dial in a "classic fender/marshall" tone, which makes them not that popular. still, the damned thing sounds great. i can get some excellent jethro tull-type sounds out of it-it's pretty middy, but sounds better than many things more expensive, if your needs match it. crate has made a lot of shit (like most of their solid-state efforts), but some of the VC series and the voodoos are generally well-recieved.

ok i'm a true bass player at heart aside from any recording or guitar stuff...

i have much admiration for the ampeg 8x10... and for 200 ... it's a steal

as far as driving it....

if you wanna stay with the darker ampeg sound.... which many prefer... get either an svt head (choose your flavor) or perhaps even better get the svp pre-amp (5 tubes, wonderful) and a separate power amp

mesa has introduced many new bass heads as of late, check these for thier sound

otherwise swr is always a good choice, as is g-k, but in that order imho...

kustom is right out tho... for me... below crate or fender or any of the others, but still check them out... it may be what you want.

these are just my opinions...

In 1976 I was using this cabinet with a SVT head and an old precision bass....awesome!
