Amp recording question

Hi there,

I need some advice on recording from my Fender Deluxe 112 Plus. This is solid state amp that is way to loud to mic in my present situation (newborn, wife, neighbors, etc...)

When I plug in a cable from the "preamp out" to my fast track ultra, the speaker is not bypassed. How do I go around this?

Should I install a "line out" on the amp? Can I just disengage the wires that go to the speaker (I realize this would harm a tube amp)?

Any advice is appreciated.

I had a similar problem. I think the best suggestion is use the basement, get a practice space or an isolation box. Line outs never get the same sound as a good old loud speaker. Unplugging a speaker from a solid state is fine but ideally also not recommended.

You can always get guitar rig or some line 6 stuff and record to computer for the time being?

I use the Digitech modeler for the same reasons. (of course, my newborn is much older now ).

The iso box is a good idea, too. You can google it for designs and drawings.

In this situation, I'd use a modeller or multi-effect as Chilli suggests rather than take a line out straight from an amp...

The preamp out is just part of an effects loop I assume and so, as you are finding, the power amp is still working and driving the speaker.

Alternatively drop the kid over at the grandparents for a day... that's what they're for!

I highly recommend a cheap practice space. In todays economy you can go around your local industrial parks a probably get a cheap small space.

This way you can crank your amp and get away from your kids, wife and neighbors

But some kind of amp modeler (standalone or computer based) is probably best as you don't have to leave your bedroom and definitely get better results then a line out

Does the amp have a master Volume?
if so just turn it down.........the pre amp level is not affected by master Vol.

Mic'ing the speaker does usually sound best

unless you are using amp plug ins later on.

The amp does not have a master volume. What if I disengage the wires to the speaker and connect them to a "line out" and then use a speaker simulator? Is this idea crazy and not worth the effort? I am just trying to see if I can use this amp somehow!

you can disconnect the speakers on a SS amp and it won't be harmed but using them as a line out is a different matter. I would imagine there are boxes that'll do it though so that might be one route. The preamp out probably isn't gonna sound that good but try it and see.
