Looking for a good practice amp (I record via POD) Won't be playing any gigs with it so loudness isn't an issue. Would like to be able to get a variety of tones with it.

try a peavey delta blues classic 30. its an alltube amp that can give you a host of sounds for most applications. its the best tub amp under 400 bucks and it stears ya clear of the solid state crap. i picked mine up for 350 a couple of years ago and in some instance i prefer it to my marshall superlead. dont let the name distract ya, its a great little workhorse;)

Well, if you have a POD, you can use that for a front-end on any amp, can't you?

If you're playing at bedroom volume, you pretty well need to have something like that to get some sound anyway, if you are doing distortion and soforth.

I like solid-state practice amps as they are less noisy at low volume and if you're using a digital front end like a POD or a J-Station or whatever, they're fine for anything.

I play clean most of the time and so may favorites here are a great little Roland "Cube 20" I got on loss-leader sale at GC in SF about twenty years ago for under $100, and the Fender Princeton Stereo Chorus I recently got at GC on sale for $199, new, a killer deal if ever there was one.

Digging around out in the garage the other night I found some amps I forgot I had including some cherry little '60s Japanese practice amp with about five tubes in it. Guess I'll do a cap job on it and see what it sounds like.

Might be interesting!

Im thinking along the lines of bongolation....the pod into a nice smaller tube amp will give you some nice tones.......

and for that matter, a pod into a small tube amp may give you a better recorded sound also....slap a sm57 in front of it.....

thanx for the replies guys.

I am an acoustic guy who just got into electric.

Scriabin - thanks man i will check it out as soon as I find a peavey dealer near me.

Gidge and Bongo: any other recommendations for a small tube amp? Will it be too noisy at low volumes? Do you use the POD in amp mode or direct for the desired tones?

If you want to use your POD, you should try the Tech21 Power Engine 60. It's $299 at Musicians Friend, and is just a 1x12 powered cabinet with a clean, transparent 60W power amp built in.

If you're talking an amp on it's own, my favotite is the Fender Blues Jr, or even the Pro Jr if you don't need reverb. They are both very responsive little tube amps, and can easily be tweaked by swapping in and out new pre amp tubes. I use 4 different sets of pre amp tubes for my Pro Jr to get different tones in the studio.
