Im considering buying a new amp, I was looking at Crates Blue VooDoo and I know a lot of other amps have similar features.

Theres a 1/4" output on the back for Line Out - Would this be ok for running into a direct box simply to convert 1/4" to XLR then into a PA snake?

I know I was talking to our other guitar player about it and he said to find something with a Balanced Line Out which is an XLR output that goes right into the snake.

a great deal of an amp's sound is based on how the poweramp and speakers are driven. you'll probably notice an overall lack of body in the signal, and more of just a fuzzed up mess.

The line out is comming from the preamp, and that's the signal you have to work with. What you hear from the amp is this signal combined with the power amp and speaker(s). In a nutshell, thats why the line out dosen't sound the same as what you hear comming from the amp. On the other hand, if an amp sounds like crap going from the line out to another amp or PA system can improve the sound greatly.

I agree, it will mroe than likely sound likr crap. Suggestion=Mic it.

On that Crate series, the line out is tapped from the speaker outputs, and has some cab emulation. This usually means a little boost in the lows and low mids, and rolloff above about 5K. It will probably sound better than a preamp out, but in any case it won't sound exactly like your amp hooked up to a cab. It's up to you to decide if the sound you get is usable. You can always mic it if you don't like it.
