Amp for Passive Monitors?

Anyone has any suggestions for amps for Passive Monitors?
Price range I guess would be 70-80, not sure if that's too much or not enough for a passive monitor.
 
Never Mind. Amps are too expensive

When you add the cost of the passive Monitors + the amps it's cheaper to go with the Active.

If your studio has an integrated amp, you can run passive monitors through it. Although from what I read, I guess the actives are better in some instances.

I've been using a Yamaha AX 592 stereo amp to run my entire gaggle of gear in my studio. This amp is pretty good as it runs two sets of speakers,[monitors included] patches my two tape decks and CD player--I can record to any of the tape decks from the CD player, and it patches in my turntable,[yeah, I still use it once in a while] and has a "clear through" button that will eliminate any coloring from the amp when I'm burning and playing CDs. Pretty nice little amp.

I guess someday I'll go to active monitors. Right now, I'm using the KRK ST8 passives--same price range as York passives only the KRKs have an 8" woofer and the Yorks only a 6.5" woofer. Big difference in sound.

Well, I have 0 (zero) amps right now, unless you count the mic-preamps in my MG 10/2. The price range of a monitor amp is about $150 or more, and I'm trying to stay in the $200 for the cost of the Monitors. So, I'm looking at used and at active.
 
I agree I'll go with Active for now. When I become famous and everyone is comming to my studio 'cause I'm the shit. Then I'll buy some really expensive Passive Monitors and a very expensive Monitor Amp to go along with them.
For now I'll have to save up some money to buy the Monitors that I like. I listened to the Mackies HR824 and HR624 and I love them both. I'm not saying that the HR624 and the HR824 compare (unless you think a 318 BMW and a 535i BMW compare). I'm going to save up my pennies to buy the 624. They will serve well for at least five years or more.

the Mackie you mentioned are $450~ each.
Your thread said you were looking in the $70-80 passive or $2-300 Active
range.

i read one article the gearhead ordered an expensive monitors,
and only got 1! sold as each!
so he was listening/waiting in MONO...saving up to go stereo. hehehe

the style of music seems to play a big part. Thumpin RAP, Bluegrass,
PUNK RAMONES, Vox Acoustic, Blues.......

more i read on subs...you might as well buy 4" $150 KRK actives or some sht..
because even the Wharfs you "may need a sub"....

if your in a band & recording..the Power/Passive combo is nice
as you can use the amp for PA or monitoring something too...

Yeah. I'm aware of those guys on e-bay that show you two monitors but are only selling one, or they show you one monitor but the description is in plural. I sent a question to a guy last week, about that. He had one monitor but the description (rather shady if you ask me) was in plural (IE 'These monitors have great flat response'), but never said if it was one or two. He never responded to my question so I assumed it was one monitor.

Yeah, I realize that I started this thread thinking of spending less than $300 but after hearing the Mackies (which in my opinion have a much open sound and better response than the Events) I have to say that I'll have to clench my teeth and wait until I have the mula to spend on the Mackies (at $900+ Retail for the pair).

I would also not spend a penny on any KRK, just not worth it. I'm not saying they are crap (because I'm sure they are worse speakers out there) but they have a whole bunch of stuff missing on the bottom end, the top end, and they are certainly not that flat sounding. I would rather go with the HR 624 than even go with the more expensive Event SP8s. Don't get me wrong the SP8s kick ass, and they are sweet. In my opinion the Mackies are much more accurate and open than the Events. Also I like the on/off button in the front of the Mackies which all of the others lack.
 
Oh! Yeah. I'm not doing music, I'm doing voice overs. If I were doing Rock-n-Roll I'd probably go with any KRK they all sound the same (ok I exagerate - but they all have the same taste to them).

thats a nice function and hard to find.
!good mention of the patching bay/Yammie.
i noticed that too on the active/monitors, no
extra inputs.
i don't know many home recordingheads that don't
have a few units to plug in.

I have some old 4ohm passives,
i thought i wanted to upgrade to amped but not sure now.
my Onkyo pumps ok, and the internal guts/discrete components
are probably better than a 75WATT chip-amp in a speaker,
and the Onkyo has Fiber optic.

ST8's and the Yammie w/thru" function, and a patch bay to boot.

I agree on the 8" vs 6.5".
