Amazing cover of an amazing song dude! Thats so good! Maybe bring the outro guitar solo up a tiny bit?? And the tamborine down SLIGHTLY? Oh man thats so good! Way to go, excellent job!!

That's cool. Really good. I don't want to be negative, because your singing is great (and a million times better than mine), but is your voice just slightly strained on some of the higher notes? It might just be phrasing or something, but the word 'promises' in the first line is a little forced - it's not necessarily a bad thing, it kinda lends emotion. Anyway, great job. I love the bass, it was always one of my favourite things about the song.

My old lady loves this song, and its her birthday on monday, so I'm doing my own version for her. I know, I know.....save the lame 'whipped' jokes for another time. :p

Anyway, please give a listen and let me know how everything sounds.

Guitar has a great sound - what are you using here?
Very cool background vocals....oohs and such.
Bass is nicely there - seems to sit just right level wise.
Drums are super - I like the tone/compression?
Solo is off the wall!!!
Way to go - no nits from me......great mix!

:) :D :) :D

Wow, thanks a lot guys. :)

TelePaul - thanks bro. I played a lot with the level of that ending solo. It tends to overtake everything if I go much higher with it, but maybe with some EQ tweaking I can bring it out more without it sounding all crazy. After stepping away for a bit, I agree about the tambourine. I'll fix it ASAP. Thanks again. :)

32-20 blues - Thanks for the input. Yeah this song pretty much put me at the limit of my already very limited vocal ability. I should have recorded it in a different key, but too little too late. I personally don't think its too bad and it gives it some rawness. Yeah, rawness, that'll be my excuse. :p

Ido - Thanks buddy. The rhythm guitar tracks are my SG through a digitech processor simulating a tube-marshall head with a 2x12 cab then close-mic'd through an old acoustic amp on the clean channel. The lead and extra stuff are pretty much the same setup, but through a 'boutique' simulator on full-gain. The drums are just your standard recording setup with very mild compression, EQ, and reverb added. Nothing fancy. :)

Thanks again everyone. :)

Super, dude.

Vox rocks. :)

The guitars sound very record quality. :) Raise the solo slightly in the end, it rocks pretty good.

The toms sound really nice.

The only thing I'd mention is that the bass might use some EQ'ing up in 100hz and then in 3-5kHz range. :)

On my system the kick thumps a little muddy for some reason. Could be that is has some verb on it or something. Or could be that I've stressed the home theater system too much. :)

This is a cool song. I haven't heard the original.

Cool. Thanks for your input. I'll see what I can do about the bass. I appreciate you listening. :)

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Saw him and the Heartbreakers in Austin about 3 months ago and I'd forgotten how much I love this song until I heard them play it. You did an almost uncanny job on the vocal...stellar.

On the negative, the drums sound fake and I personally would like a slightly fatter bass (low end of bass, not more kick)... but dude, lol....it's sooooo good; those are minor nits.

Lol. Thanks. I assure you those are real drums. :D

So what sounds 'fake' about them?

One of the great Petty songs and he had a few of those. This is a fantastic version, so true to the original. My one nit is in the breakdown at 2.23 with the triple guitar stabs: in the second of each triple, is the last stab a semi too high? I could be totally wrong, it's been a while. Otherwise drums, guitars sound superb, great job on vox too

TOP JOB, the bass could use a slight nudge & the snare is a teensie bit artificial sounding - might just be it's mix placement.
Greg WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOME ORIGINALS? I know this isn't a songwriter forum etc but you've posted covers & with those chops you must be able to create something - or at least get someone to write for you.

I'll write for him!! Please Please! :p :D

Good Job dude...I listened to the original and it's up there man. Hope it get's you some.... ;)

Bulls hit - Thank you. As far as I can tell, I think I played that part correctly. Listening to the original, that part has some piano in it too. I recorded some piano as well, but I can't play piano very well and it didnt sound good with the distorted guitars so I cut it out. I did the whole song by ear though, so I may have some stuff wrong. Thanks for listening. :)

Rayc - Thanks man. I'm really not that interested in originals. I don't know why. I have a few in the works, but I'm in no hurry to do anything with them. I have a lot more fun doing covers. I figure I can't write songs as good as the bands/artists I like to listen to, so I don't even really try. And playing someone elses original material is the same as doing a cover that noone knows. :o

myhatbroke - Thanks for listening. I know you're busy cutting class and writing about fat bitches and hot-dogs and whatever else you college dorks think is funny, so I wouldn't want to take up any of your valuable time. :p

First class job end to end. PLEASE tell me that was real drums. She'll love it.

Lol. Thanks. I PROMISE those are real drums. Do they sound that bad? I'm still not very comfortable with my drum recordings. I'll be getting new drum mics for christmas, so maybe they will help. :o

I like the drums...and in that particular song, I think the drums carry it. The snare hit is so good, is it syncopated? I'm not amazing at rhythm but I like the break down on the toms at the end.

A fantastic take on a classic tune! You nailed this one!!No nits here...just digging the song...thanks for sharing!

Its not syncopated, but the snare does pretty much carry the song. I don't know the technical musical mumbo-jumbo, but during the first part of the verses and the intro I'm not using much kick. Pardon the elementary explanation, but its just 'kick/snare/kick-kick/snare/snare/snare' and i whack the closed hat on every snare beat. Once the verses pick up and go into the chorus, I play it pretty straight with alternating kick/snare beats and quarters on the hat.

Thanks for listening. I appreciate the compliments. :)

Great job on the song-good Tom Petty vibe on the vocal! Guitars are all layered very nicely and the rhythm section is pumping it right along. I find nothing to criticize-Congrats on a job well done... :)
