Has anyone any experience with either of these processors with audio recording specifically in mind?

are there any major considerations i should take into account before ordering my computer for digital/ audio recording?

cheers

This has been debated alot before...

Do a search on the BBS, but it basicely comes down to this:

- AMD gives you more processing power (ie more real time plug-ins) and costs less BUT some chipsets (Via in particular) can be a bit unstable depending on what soundcard and hardware in general you'll be using

- PIV is expensive as hell and a bit underpowered when it comes to audio (PIVs have weaker FPUs than Athlon XPs) BUT
Intel is still the standard that most hardware manufacturers test their new products on and Intel generally makes better chipsets so if you're loaded with cash the PIV is probably a more stable solution

i'm running a Protools system on a 1 gHz AMD Athlon Thunderbird. Not a single problem. Very powerful, very fast, and very stable chip. I highly recommend them.

For AMD, try to get one of the newest ones (XP's) becaase of better streaming support, SSL, and use only the kt266a chipset. The Abit mobo is one of the best, and it supports ata133 hard drives, even better for audio.

a p3 1Ghz with an asus cusl2 mainboard and some ram can still do a lot of tricks.

i'm running a Asus A7V133, ViaKT133A chipset

This is a VERY stable board, one of the best really. Highly recommended for Protools.

Check out duc.digidesign.com - there's ALOT of useful info there too...

My recommendation:

The Soyo Dragon boards are killer! at $146 on www.newegg.com and has onboard 5.1 audio (as good as Creative Live 5.1), onboard LAN chip (for uploading your tracks via broadband connection), AND the Promise IDE RAID chipset. Translation: Get one fast drive of moderate size for OS and audio apps and two fast 40GB or so drives in RAID 0... sees them as one 80GB and almost twice as fast!!! This SOYO config is now available for P4 as well for around $10 more. Nice board layout as well, easily overclockable (I don't recommend for audio recording, though... messes with quality), and PRETTY! ;-)

I've used Athlons since their debut and the XPs are topnotch! For most apps they kick the crap out of "faster" P4s. The XPs also run cooler than previous CPUs... a plus when your case is full of drives, SCSI cards, etc.

I keep my audio signal outboard as much as possible. Just paranoid about internal interference. Roland U-8 is my toolbox right now... I can use it with my home PC and then take on the road with the laptop.. it's USB. Nice. Hope this helps.

No VIA chipset, Intel Chipset, with Intel CPU (trust me). Dont worry abou the PIV, it actually wont do much good unless you get like a PCI-233, really nice motherboard, and work with windows XP or 2000. PIII is definately better for Audio then PIV. I have a PIII, and it is much more stable than the Athlons (ive had enough with Athlons). I have had many problems with the VIA chipset motherboards. If you want most stability, best performance, keep everything one brand, Intel CPU, Intel Chipset, Ram doesnt matter though. Asus and Abit motherboards. Trust me, its worth the extra cash for a nicer motherboard. If you do go with AMD, then go Intel Chipset.

What?? Yeah VIA are buggy and I say stay away from them too, but that doesn't mean stay away from AMD... two seperate thing...

Now days there are much much better chipsets for AMD's than VIA...

AMD761 chipset
there are the new SiS chipsets as well...

I have an ECS K7S5A w/ an SiS735 chipset... tomshardware rated this board/chipset as a much better value than the VIA266 or AMD761

There is also the new SiS745 chipset to be released on board soon I think if not already...

there was a thread about the K7S5A board over on audioforums, and all that use it for audio are running a solid system... most on Win XP too...

Just some other options for chipsets for AMD Mobo's

haha sorry. I didnt mean that AMD was incompatible, but was less incompatible and i believe a little more less reliant than an intel chip. Also i was kinda in a pissy mood when i wrote that so i was just kinda blabberin. I just meant that if you have the extra cash an intel would be the safer way to go.

Get a good AMD approved power supply with stable voltage and don't save on the CPU cooler, and you will have rock solid AMD system.
