ryant , re: chipsets. if were me i would look at an nvidea based amd system.
there have been issues in the past with certain via chipsets if you read around the net, but others say this has now been solved. whatever i or anyone tells you this week could change in a few weeks by the time you make a purchase as the computer industry is ever changeing - so the key -
and this is what i do - i take my multitrack software plus sound card and run a trial on the system before i purchase it. some people say stay away from the cheaper amd motherboards - yet ive had friends systems run multitrack better better on the cheaper mbds than the expensive ones (and also vice versa). so the real key to running a successfull DAW (this goes for intel as well imho) is to run a test or even rent a system for a few weeks.
some vendors will let you do this. i could tell you a motherboard and chipset like say a biostar with nvidia that works but it might not for you.
one thing i DO KNOW , i dont run on my amd systems on the pci bus anything other than the sound card.
also note with these new processors like the AMD64 the whole architecture will change of the PC. this is on going and will never end.
if were me i would look at a barebones solution/build yourself etc.
OR you can get here where i live mbds plus cheaper (than 64) amd processors that will do 80 tracks for 120 bucks. just an idea.

I've heard that the NVIDIA chipsets outperform the VIA chipsets.

I'm also currently debating whether I want to go AMD or Intel. I asked the same question at techimo.com

That thread got me leaning more towards Intel, but this thread put me right back in the middle. If I stayed in this position until I was ready to buy I would probably go with AMD because I am a little more familiar with them.

from everyone ive talked to nv seems to be the popular choice.
however to be fair many via users arent reporting problems.
frankly its a crap shoot.
you pays yer money etc.
thats why i suggest trying out the system with your soundcard and software before buying it if you can.
my preference as ive said many times due to pricing is athlon. i;m not sure most home recordists need amd 64's or dual opterons.
the sweet spot right now is a high end athlon.
just read the forums on this bbs.
many folks are happy with them. 60 tracks is way more than most folks need.

also dont discount the new amd sempron processor.
systems are appearing in my area for 440 bucks.
it replaces the old duron which would do 40 tracks.
it seems pretty speedy from what i see. the old duron was no slouch either.

I have no doubt that the nForce chipsets are good performers in the DAW world, but as far as them outperforming the latest incarnations offered by VIA ..... No clue!
Granted, back in the days of VIA's KT133 and I believe up to the KT333 there was some issues that have pretty much been negated with the latest 4in1 drivers.
The initial pondering still remains though.
Do the nForce chipsets offer native SATA support?

for the K8V's AMD 64 boards are there some sort of jumpers you need to configure to get the onboard sound card and spdif to be recognized by windows?

Asus Tech support sucks! thats why i need to ask here, and cuz its not working.

Gotta love the motherboard manual...it will answer your questions like this.

No, you shouldn't have to change any jumpers. If anything, it would be a setting in the BIOS, but it should be enabled by default.

thats why i asked if it had something to do with the jumpers cuz I DID READ the manual, and I DO have it enabled in the BIOS thats whats got me bugging, maybe its a defective board

So windows isn't picking it up at all?

nope its like my MOBO doesn't have an onboard sound card...and asus TECH support SUCKS!...just tell me its a bad mobo and i'll return it

Well I got thru to Tech support and they said that the K8V MOBO's don't support pci and on board soundcard support simultaneously, anyone with a K8V using a PCI sound card and on board sound card simultaneously?
