i don't keep up witht he cpu world as well as i should. what is the difference in performance between dual-core chips and dual-prcoessor setups? obviously the latter has two cpu's, wheres the former has only one. why dual-core over dual cpu (like the opteron)? is it cheapter, does it perform better?

definitly cheaper(one opteron is like 500!!)....i doubt it performs better.

The Opteron is also available in dual core flavors, and why should be obvious. Why go with dual CPUs (two cores) when you can go with dual dual core CPUs (four cores). Dual cores don't perform quite as well as dual CPUs, but they [should] cost less, consume less power, and obviously are more dense.

Do the new dual core chips need a new motherboard or chipset etc? Do they use a different pin set? Also, as of right now the new AMD dual core chips are VERY expensive. Double the price of the new pentium dual core's:(

16 cores.....

quote: "This was not your everyday dual or quad opteron system - it was an 8-way Dual Core Opteron System (16 Cores!) with 128gb of RAM! "

wonder how many tracks this coudl do.

No new motherboard is needed. All you need is a socket 939 motherboard and a thick wallet.

Good, i just bought a new motherboard that already has the 939 chipset. I have been taking a look at the new Direct Connect AMD64's as well. No Frontside bus. It's supposed to be designed specifically with audio in mind.
