hello everybody,

i've been home recording for a few years with diferent recorders (adats and mostly cassette).
i got a computer a few mounths ago for computer stuff.
assuming i could use it in my home studio when i got the chance.
it's got an AMD K6-2 500mhz. it was billed as "GREAT FOR MUSIC AND MEDIA". i've heard it's as good as a pentium ii from some sources. and unusable for most digital recording from others.

anyone have any experience or opinion about it?
i'd like to hear it.

thanks

AMD is the rival to Intel. They both put out quality CPUs (especially the modern AMD Athlon/Duron/Thunderbird vs the Pentium 3/4) and are both compatible with PC-based software. The only real difference is that the AMD I believe (with the K6-2) are SLIGHTLY slower than an equivalently rated Intel. So a PII-500 would be slightly faster. But then the price comes into the picture. AMD is MUCH cheaper than Intel. And in fact, the new AMD CPUs (mainly the Thunderbird) are as fast or even faster than an equally rated Intel Pentium III, at half the price just about. It's a win-win situation for all you guys looking to build your next system. Buy AMD! Get yourself an AMD Thunderbird 800 and an Abit KT7 motherboard and save yourself like $300. Hope this info helps you out. Ignore the "no go for digital recording" bit...the CPU is fine. Now you need to look at your amount of RAM, hard drive space, speed of hard drive, and the sound card. These are key with recording.

I wouldn't recommend that you ignore the warnings. The problems with AMD and digital recording does not lie in the performance but in compatibility. Some HW (and I think SW) manufacturers specifically states that they don't support AMD processors.

A quick search could have told you this, and more...

i was told the AMD Athlon beats the pIII...
in quality and price that is.
though not my own opinion, so don't slash me.

i was under the impression the processor was just sort of a turbo charged conduit that was universal to the software and the hardware. it was just a matter of it being fast enough to process the info.

NO.

sorry, though i sympathise with your way of thinking different processors have different compatibility.

i believe the aardvark cards run ONLY on intel, though i'm not to sure...

Always check before you buy processor/soundcard that they are compatible!

aardvark and amd processor

with aardvark card it is not the problem with amd procesor but with via chepset on matherboards which are not compatible with motorola chip.
if you want to use the amd proc you must buy a matherboard which is based on KT or KX chipset and there won't be any problems anymore with compatibility.
good luck

thanks for correcting me ;)

i only blablabla without being certain.

knew there was something with it though...

but that's not enough nnow is it?

you all are giving me some good food for thought, i appreciate it.
thing is right now the pc with the AMD K6-2 500mhz is what i've got and i'm going
to have to make the best of.
can anyone suggest some good compatible sound cards and software preferably in
the under $300 range?

under $300????

boy you're going cheap!

you're gonna have to tell us more then your budget though if you want replies that make sense (mine never make sense ...;))

tell us:
how many inputs how many outputs ?
are you gonna be fideling around in your bedroom or are you gonna record cd's?

stuff like that makes the price.

well, lets see.
i'll start with the computer: 6 month old hp pavilion small tower w/ 15 gig hd, 64mb ram (soon to be 128), CD-RW, and of course the AMD K6-2 500mhz.

i have tons of outboard gear. i wanted to slim down a little and do most effects and mixing on the computer.

my music is 1/2 midi and half recorded stuff.
i like my roland mc-50 sequencer and would want a program that could send and receive midi time clock.

i have a small makie mixer for a mic preamp. i wanted to not have to buy a larger mixer for mixing down. i would rather do the mixdown in the computer.

i want to make cd's and mp3's.

The Swede Is Right.

Ola is correct.
It is a compatibility factor more than it is a CPU quality issue.
Most systems were designed & geared for Intel II and above chips.
Read it many times in many different computer music mags.
Still hate me, Ola?;)

Of course I still hate you. I cannot remember why though;) Probably some religious brawl over in the cave. Din't we call that off? BTW congratz on your post #666.

Anyway, I would definetly consider AMD processors, if I wasn't into computer recording. Compatibility is everything and I'd take just about any precaution (sp?) to avoid conflicts. Also, I hope to get dual CPUs on my next computer, which rules out AMD.

You know what they say though: Buy cheap, buy twice - then slap 'em onto a dual mobo...

Cheers

K6 amd compatability

When I did my research for buying a sound card and I/O.
I found that the amd k5 and k6 were the most uncompatable processors for most of the pc recording hardware.
Everywhere I looked there was always a reference to a motorola chip in the amd k5 and k6 processor that made it uncompatable.

My Pc has a amd, but its a 750mhz processor.30 gig hd and 128mb ram.I bought gadgetlabs wave 824 (now out of the biz)
I have been very pleased with the recordings that I have done with my equipment.
Look at layla and mona cards and I/O's
I think that they are compatable with k5 and k6.
