i had a pent 3 640 mb ram, 1010lt, 60 gig h.d and cubase sx.win xp pro.

life was slow but good.

now i have an amd 2500+ barton core,1010lt, radeon 9000 video with dual monitors,k7n2 delta l mobo, 512 mb 400 ddr.nvidia chipsets.

life has gone from slow to stop.

i cant get xp pro to run consistantly. somtimes it will run, sometimes i get an error saying that windows has detected an error and has shut down the computer so it will not be damaged, somtimes it will check the drives for inconsistancy, and come back with so many errors that were not there 5 min before. i have reformatted the hard drive many times ,(losing everthing), it wont even reformat as a ntsf file system. it will only format as a fat32 file system. and i have tried 2 maxtor hard drives both with the same results.

i guess all i need now is access to a tall building to throw from, or
maybe just a sledge hammer.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Two possibilities come to mind - bad memory or bad (or insufficient) power supply. Go get MemTest86 and run it (it boots from a floppy). What kind of motherboard and memory do you have?

as it turns out , the power supply is only 250w. so i think that this is the pronlem.

wow a 250 watt power supply, ouch.
Even cheapy piece of crap computers come with at least a 300 watt these days.

Whether it's the power supply or not, get a bigger power supply!

My guess is the power supply is an issue, or if it's not now with what you listed it will become a issue pretty soon. Lets try to avoid sparks flying out from the back of your PC and a nice burning smell.

and make sure those video card drivers are up-to-date...wasn't the Radeon 9000 the one with iffy drivers, and ATI finally got back on track at the 9500 series? at least I think that's what I recall.

I'm kinda sleepy nice exausting hot day.

Check out Enermax power supplies!

I agree with the above, in this order - memory, cpu settings, power supply, and heat.

Oops! Sorry! That was rude of me. I kinda sabotaged your thread, zook!

I have an enermax the 450 (or maybe it was 430) dual whisper supply. It's nice and pretty silent unless you put your ear RIGHT next to one of the fans. It does well, I haven't checked out the thermaltake.

I hear them recommended for CPU fans mostly, but when it comes to power supplies- Enermax and...crap- forgot the name. Always seem to be the top recomendations.

An xp2500 and a radeon 9000 may be a bit too much for a 250W.

I have an enermax 430, but would not call it silent. But it has to work, you could dry your hair with what comes out.

Fortron also get good marks.

How about taking it back to the shop that built it?

Just a thought.:D

the problem was that i built it my self. the tower case that i used was from a computer built in 1999. but now it works. i had to replace the power ssupply to a 400 watt units and i had to change the ram. the shop where i bought the parts did a diagnostic on it and it turned out that the msi k7n2 delta l board only likes samsung memory.

another thing that happened is that my 60 gig h.d got fried during this upgrade. i dont know how , but i cant even scan , defrag, or format this drive. do i bought an 80 gig for fairly chreap.

in the end i now have 512 ddr 400 ram, radeon video, dual monitors, xp 2500+ barton core, k7n2 delta l mobo with nvidia chipsets and a delta 1010lt , 80 gig 7200 h.d for file storage and an 8 gig for programs, and a 400 w power supply. cubase sx. every thing works great now.

thanks for all the help.
