My new board is a Gigabyte GA-7DXE with amd 761 northbridge
and 686b Via southbridge chipset combo. Does the AMD
recommended still apply here? Or has anyone experienced
problems with these chipsets and their soundcard of choice?
Specifically, would an Audiophile rebel against this chipset
combo?

I think that should be fine. I have an ABIT KG7, which has the same chipset. It works great with my Delta 66.

The problems we've all heard about are caused by this: VIA didn't implement a certain extension of the PCI bus standard. That doesn't necessarily mean they are to blame for everything. It's that many manufacturers of PCI peripherals just assume that they can use this extension. I've heard that the problems no longer exists with the newest VIA chipsets so I guess they fixed the PCI bus thingy.

It seems that the most problems have occurred with the VIA KT133(A) chipsets. These chipsets are a combination of a for each chipset unique northbridge and a 686(A/B) southbridge.

The PCI bus controller is situated on the southbridge so if you add all things up, I can't assure that you won't have any problems... In the end it is a combination of a lot of big and small factors that will make it all work or not.

My knowledge covers mainly computers in general. I can't say anything specific about the use of this chipset combo with the Audiophile soundcard.

By the way: What Whoopysnorp says makes sense as well. The KG7 uses the same northbridge/southbridge combination. It should say something.

I'd like to thank both you fellows for replying.
See ya soon.
