am i the only that records one track at a time in to my computer?

im using sonar

its not that i cant multi track i just find it easier this way mainly because im doing it all myself

i record my synth first get a great mix

then vocals get a great mix

then overdubs and whatever else

any input would be greatly appreciated.

oh yeah heres my setup triton le, yamaha su 700 (which is highly underrated, but is for sale!!!) behringer mixer, which works just fine and a audio technica atr-30(i know im not the only one with this mic).

thanks a million.

of course you're not the only one!

i do track by track sometimes, and sometimes lots of tracks live! depends on the situation!

i do one track at a time......

unless im doing the scratch tracks....after i work out my beautiful Fruity Loops drum track ill do a vocal with guitar at the same time or a vocal with the bass.......

of course most of the time this gets recorded over.....

The only time I record more than one track at a time is when I'm recording drums or recording something in stereo. I've never even recorded in a studio and recorded more than one track at a time. There have been times that I'd play a reference guitar track through the mixer when the drummer was recording his track(s), but that only went to his headphones, never to tape. I guess my music has never had much of a "band" dynamic to it, though.

One track at a time, except for some drum parts - snare kick and hi hats are tracked one at a time everything else in stereo...

I never really liked doing it, i like recording live.

Problem is you have to rely on others, thus i learnt the advantages of track by track.

Im working on a song at the moment, have been for a month im just happy with the drum mix now.

After listening to the thing (only drums) over and over and.........im hearing the song i can imagine almost, hear the other instruments and how they should go... i love working like this!!

I think this is why home recording is in a boon, its your own time your own pace and beats the hell outa playin sport mate!

Mixit,

I agree with you, but it drives my "sheila" mad, hearing the same bloody song for hours on end. And don't mention sport, one day we might just beat you ausies at something!:D

hehe "sheila"we never use that really.

Luckily im on my own but not for long married in 4weeks i am !
I'll just kick her in the teeth if she complains.

Paul i think you would beat us at soccer somehow :D

One track at a time.
After I lay the scratch track(s).

MiXit-G,she definatly sounds like a keeper.
:D

Hey congratulations for 4 weeks time! Sounds like you allready got married life sussed:D

I just told her from the beginning, music is my lifes passion and that i would'nt be able to do it without her.

I told her i need a cave for my music and she can do whatever she likes with the rest of the house, and never to step in to my domain..unless i yell "bring me another beer bitch" :D:D

Rofl:D :D :D

Best post I've read for ages!

Shows you to be the subtle, caring and sensitive person that no doubt you really are. I think your marriage should be fine founded on such strong principles of sharing, consideration and conciliation.:p And your music should reflect that sort of partnership too.

I'll try the same approach myself, see where it gets me. God, I've learned something today.

You're not alone in this universe...

I play everyting myself so I have to record one track at a time, too. I lay down the drum track first, than bass, than keyboard and last but least the vocals. It's time consuming, but fun job. I always tell people I do it deliberately because I want "total control" and most people believe it and think it's cool. Babes love it when I whisper in their ear "you know I lay down each track one at a time"...

Suggestions (be it about music or a better pick up line since this one don't seem to work really well) are always welcome though!

Ditto. :D

We've agreed that the basement is mine. Which is why I bought a house with a huge basement. We'll see if the pact holds up after we're married.

And yeah, often one track at a time.

I would like to multitrack, but...

it's expensive. You need to have more preamps and mics, processing power and the time of lots of people.
But on the other hand playing together glues the music of a group, it sets the magic of it.
Of course I don't think it makes much of a difference if you're playing Erasure-like style, but for other things is very good.
I did a record with my group a couple of years ago and we did separate takes. Although it sounded very polished, the "group" thing was kinda lost.

Cheers, Andrés

You're not alone

I'm glad you feel that way. I do the same type of recording. I work with a 4-track Tascam
for any location work, but transfer it immediately to my computer where I use Voyetra Digital
Orchestrator Pro. My sister and I are old over-the-hill hippies (at least in my mind). We sing
folk songs and play two guitars. I also add a bass line later with my acoustic Fender bass.

From there, I add additional vocals, some effects occassionally or even MIDI tracks. I don't play keyboards so I have to it not in real time. I can add and edit music and have written a bit
so this works out well for me.

I don't do it to try to sell, only for the enjoyment of myself and my family. but it works for us. I'm about to complete my second CD and I love it.

Keep up the good work and you will find a way that works for you.

No, you're not a lone . The world is full of frustrated closet rock'n'roll stars that took a different turn in the road somewhere. That doesn't mean that you ever get it out of your system, it just occupies a different IRQ priority level in your life.

I HAVE to play and sing. The only way that fits with the rest of what I want from life, is one track at a time in my basement.

First I develop an idea. Then I write the music. Then I write the lyrics. Then I think about how I want it to sound for a couple of days/weeks. Then I program the drum tracks. Then I record the drums. Then I add the bass. Then I record the guitar parts, keys, sax, percussion, and vocals and backing vocals each one at a time. Then I start over with the changes I want to make, hoping to get a good take before I start to hate the song.

After it's all recorded, I mix it, edit it, burn it to cd, and give copies to my family and friends hoping they'll like it. Sometimes someone says "hey, that's pretty good, maybe you could sell this stuff."

No thanks! How many artists working for a major label have that much input or control over their music?

It's my hobby. It's a labor of love. It's a release. It's my passion.

"Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive. Try not to confuse it with what you do to survive." (Jackson Browne)

Sorry if I wax philosophical.

Oh yeah, I'm also the producer, director, arranger, and I took the cover photo, and wrote the liner notes. Oh yeah, I'm also the roadie, guitar tech, guy that gets the beer etc. Wouldn't have it any other way.

No, you're not the only one that records one track at a time.

Reminds me of a time that my wife said she saw a female who thought she was a hot "Shirley". It wasn't until about 10 minutes later when I had cleaned up all of the pee out of my pants that I told her it was "Sheila", not "Shirley"..... She punched me. Sorry I am still laughing. It is the small things I guess.
