Am I the only one that doesn't own an SM57??

These things seem to be all the rave and it seems that "everyone" has at least one, and I just wanted to know if there's anyone else out there that doesn't own one (anyone that's been recording for a while that is).
 
I dont think it's that they're "all the rave"..it's just that they're usable cheap mics. As my mic collection builds, I find I use the SM-57 less and less.
 
no, you are the only one. the outcast, they. uhh i dunno. i own 4, i think they are quite useful and for $80 not a bad buy. you will get more use out of it if you are playing rock/jazz/blues more so then rap or classical... but whatever floats your boat.
 
I don't have one...yet.
I want to have at least 2-4 of them in the future. I'll probably find some used ones, 'cause you can get some real bargains that way.

I don't own an sm-57, and I doubt i ever will. I've never considered getting one.
 
The reason everyone has a 57 or 58 is because when it comes down to it, they are the best bang-for-your-buck mic around.

They are cheap(in price), versitile, take a beating, and produce a good enough sound to be used in a pro recording studio.

And I've had them recommend to me by everyone I've basically talked to, plus one producer thats been in the biz for quite a while, and I trust what he says =)

So why wouldn't you want one??

Well..I never met anyone who didnt have one. Just kidding. Heres the thing, if youre not recording drums or micing cabs then you probably dont need them and will live a happy fulfiled life without them. Seeing as how drums and guitar involve at least 85% of music, most people find themselves purchasing one or two.
 
I do record drums (and just borrow my friends SM57s when I do ;)), but not guitar cabs. Most of the time just record my guitar direct as sort of a scratch pad for the songs I write and haven't had any real projects in a while, been recording our bands demo at our guitar players house because his dad just got some nice stuff.
 
I got 2 SMack 57's and now 3 SMack 58's.

57's are basically the standard.

The SM57/58 are basically the standard mics for recording and live. There might be other mics just as good for the same price, but the 57/58's are very varsitle, and very durable for both studio and road. I own around 7 57's and 6 58's, which comes in handy when recording drums. Also, they work perfect with other larger condenser mics. You use a AT4033 for the warmth on an accoustic guitar, then throw on a 57 to get a nice punchy sound. Perfect combination.

I also shouldnt forget that i found using the 57 is the best way for micing a guitar amp.

There are many uses for a 57 which is why it is the live and studio standard. Not only does it have a good sound overall, and low static. but has been the most durable mic i have owned.

you just havn't heard a good ribbon mic on a guitar cab :)

Uh, Uh, No i also do not own a 57, But i gotta PL80.
 
Ditto most everyone else says - cheap, durable, useful mics. Probably most every beginner's first "real" microphone.

Also - I play a guitar with Dimarzio pickups through a Lab series amp. Pretty heavily distorted, midrange 1970's rock sound, and it has to be fairly loud to get the right tone. I found that a SM-57 about 2 feet off the amp is just about PERFECT. Mind I've only tried 6-7 different types of mics in this setup, but the sound I get with the 57 is exactly "right".

Hey ametth.....

Have you tried a Beyer M160 on a cab? I'm considering one after a recommendation for just that purpose....

i saw a few reviews ofthe RoyerLabs R-121, and they all were just amazed at how it sounded micing a guitar amp ....miced from a distance from 6-18 inches...so why are we continually told by everyone the sm57 is the best mic for an amp?....I sure would like to hear one of these ribbon mics...someone with $$$ enlighten us...
 
Bruce, I havn't used the M160 on guitar cabs..only the Royer. I love the Royer on guitar (SM..what??).

I'm interested in buying a Beyer mic to, and I live just outside of Toronto and I'm just wondering where U plan to buy yours =)

although I'm probly not going to buy one till I hear your results, I'm still interested in where U plan to get one...... they don't sell em at Steve's unfortunaly...
