Hey, my first post.

I have researched long and hard about the essentials of recording. This is what I’ve come up with. This is for recording an odd post-rock band with drums, guitar, viola, bass, and samples/keys/noise.

~Purchased~
Good Computer---- 1.3 GHZ, 256 Ram, Empty 40 Gig hard drive, CDRW drive
Cubase SX
Delta Omni Studio
2 SM57's
AKG D 112---------Kick Drum

~Purchasing ~
MXL 603 Matched Stereo Set
Audio Technica ATHM40fs headphones

I'm clueless on the headphones; these are in my price range, randomly selected.

Is this the most effective studio for the money? Have I done anything wrong? Do I need anything else? Would you suggest any different products?

Thanks.

Your computer needs more memory. At the very least get another 256MB ram.
You also need a 2nd hard drive. Pick up an SATA 120GB Seagate Barracuda for around $90. This will hold your audio files only.

The omnistudio has only 2 preamps, so you'll need more, or a mixer, if you want to record drums to 3 or 4 tracks

Select the headphones depending upon their purpose. Senheisers are nicely padded very less leak, while AKG is pretty nice for tracking. Your computer needs more memory and harddrive space. Go to www.newegg.com you can get good deals.

Yeah, thats a seperate hard drive, my other one is 20 gig.

I've only been messing with the two preamp inputs... So it won't except mics direct in?

You can send mics that don't need phantom power to a 1/4"... but NASTY. It's pretty gross sounding.

You can pick up audiobuddy preamps, or a small mixer like the Yamaha MG10/2 with 4 preamps for around $95
