Am I on the right track?

I thought it was about time I posted something substantial here.

I've had the reg codes for n-Track for a couple of days and I'm a 4-6 weeks off of recording 8-9 songs for my first CD.

Basically at the moment I'm in the pre-production phase of things, familiarising myself with n-Track etc... so I made this rough demo for everyone to pull apart and tell me where to improve things before I start recording for real. It doesn't have vocals yet and you don't need to tell me how shit the bass sounds :)

It's 5.1Mb, and I apologise for this but I had to encode at 160kbps otherwise the cymbals got chewed up pretty bad. If it's too big for some of you, I could post just a section, say 2Mb if you want me to. Also, I know some people have problems with Juston... hell I do!!! So I could post it at geocities if there is the need. All comments will be much appreciated.

Some very workable head-banging stuff.
It does sound somewhat empty without the vocals. But speaking of the right track:
Just imagining mixing this with an added vocal led me to theorize a piece of equipment that I am not aware currently exists.
What if there was a box that....
Did a realtime multiband analysis of the vocal track that was recorded separately with the LegendMix as the click-track. And then carved a synced (adjustable as to degree) EQ cut in the LegendMix that was the same as the profile of the vocal track. It would seem that it would be far easier to drop the vocal onto the backup track.
Would this be a desirable effects box?
Or is my head ringing too hard from listening to your piece?

Doc,

I'm glad it gave your neck muscles a good work out :)

It may not be as dark or as heavy as S8-N's masterpieces but I still like to think that people might wanna do some serious moshing once they hear my music.

As far as your effects box goes, yeah I could do with one... but I guess the point is don't bother mixing stuff together until you have all the tracks at your disposal.

Vocals will be coming soon, I just wanted to test the waters to make sure I wasn't doing anything blatantly wrong.

Thanks once again

Cooperman,
I don't think you're doing anything wrong here, I think it sounds great! I sure wish I could play guitar like some of you folks on this site. Makes me want to keep practicing. I thought the guitars sounded great, the bass went well with the mix too (also more good playing). I'm really new at this stuff, but are those real drums? If they are then the drummer is a crazed animal looking for food. Good in other words.
I just can't think of anything wrong with this in my ears, Cooperman. Its funny because I was trying to put lyrics to it myself when I was listening, so I hope you will post it again sometime with your words.
Its a cool tune. Good job, its sounds great to me.

Sshhh... Bobbo, I'll let you in on a little secret. The drums and the bass were all done on Fruity Loops... don't tell anyone...hehe :D I'm glad you liked it though!!! I usually have a pretty good idea on how I want the drums to go... in my old band, much to my drummer's dismay, I was always telling him how the drums should go.

I'll re-post it especially for you when I get the vocals done... it'll certainly be interesting to see how different the lyrics/ideas you thought should go with the song compared what I've written for the song.

Don't be so down on yourself anyway bobbo, Blackbag, Prodigal Son and Relieve Me are on my Winamp play list... can't wait for some more stuff from you!!

Thanks Cooperman. I did find a pretty neat site on the web for learning about guitar soloing and some other basics etc., called guitartricks.com. You can look at the tabulature and download the way the author is playing it, and then try it yourself. Its been good practice for me, and I'm learning some stuff I probably need to learn, because I just go all over the place not knowing what I'm doing or knowing what note I'm going to play. Its a scarey way to play solos, but it does work out pretty good sometimes. I played guitar for awhile in this band we where trying out and it would be solo time for me, and I would be really scared, but I would just pick a note to start off with somewhere on the neck and go crazy not knowing what I was doing and everyone in the band (including me) would just be laughing the whole time. I think the audience would catch on that I was pretty bad at guitar but would give me credit for acting funny I guess. It was fun, but boy it was bad.
That'll be cool to hear your finished version. (I won't tell anyone about the bass and drums....)

I wanna hear yer stuff and juston is giving me a hard time...juston is where I post too and I'm getting frustrated...tried every 30 minutes or so...but I'll keep tryin'...gibs

Juston gave me a hard time when I uploaded it too... it was SO slow... I'll upload it when I get home to geocities and I'll post the url for you.

When I haven't gotten an internet explorer error message, they want me to leave my e-mail address. Why? They don't need to know my address. I would like to hear your stuff but I just don't like leaving my address around.

Ok... geocities wouldn't let me upload it for some reason so I signed up for an i-drive account. I hope this works for everyone who can't get Juston working.
www.idrive.com

my account name is cooperman_au

To avoid any confusion you don't need a password, you just type this into the "visit an idrive" bit.

I have no idea how good idrive is... I just know other people on here use it. Good luck with the d/l's :)

idrive got me where I needed to go...your tune is awesome....the canned drums and bass were very very very good for canned...the mix was damned good for a roughie...the playing excellent...great sounding banger stuff....can't wait for the vocals.....gibs

Thanks gibs :)

As I am so used to hearing the canned drums and bass I didn't know how convincing they were going to be. I know they don't sound real but I tried to use the most realistic samples I could find... by the sounds of it I've done an ok job.

Everyone with their supportive comments has really motivated me to get cracking on the recording front. Thanks you guys!!! Keep an ear out for further posts.

Coop, I'm having a tough time trying to download this one...I'm not ignoring you! As soon as I can manage it, I'll post my review! I think my problem is an AOL thing.

I'm having some trouble with the d/l as well... will try again later.

I can't believe Juston AND idrive are giving you guys problems... you just can't good service nowadays. Thanks for persisting though guys. :)

I just got an email from Juston.com and they said something like this, "do to the increased popularity of Juston and the heavy traffic, we will be doing a major upgrade in our system. So between 8am to 8pm on tuesday march 21st we will be out of service" It was something like that. So maybe they will be getting better. However, when I do major upgrades, it usually means that I will be angry for a month until I find out what I did wrong to my computer. I wish they taught computers in school when I went.
