Am I on the right track with this recording? I realize that it is a rough runthrough with mistakes, but any comments are appreciated, thanks!

It is a song I heard that was recorded by John Denver, don't know who wrote it.

I think t sounds pretty good. May be some mistakes, but I don't hear anything that turns me off. I like it.

I'm listening, I really like the guitar sound...what guitar, how'd you record it?

Yeah, I think you did well getting a smooth sound with the voice, maybe a little thin sounding? maybe not? maybe boost i little highs? maybe not?

I think it sounds pretty good

i haven't heard the original, but i think you captured a lot of feeling on this one. i'm going to listen to it again!

Taylor 914-ces guitar with the Gefell M300 through an Avalon AD2022. Ya, my chain tends to run a bit thin, but maybe some tweaking might help that.

Rick,

sounded pretty damn good to my untrained ears

did you get your effects sorted out with your 1212M card?

Hey Rick,

Very sweet sounding guitars, I would tweak the eq a tad for the high E and the B string just to give a little more fullness, but the rest of the guitars sound very nice!

The vocals sound slightly too up front as in the volume, just drop them down or bring the guitars up!

I can't say I have heard John Denvers version of that but I can imagine him doing so!

Nice work, very relaxing to listen too!
Thanx for sharing!

Gorty :)

For some reason, even though I am less than 12 inches from the mic, my recordings tend to be thin, I don't understand why. Signal chain: Peluso 2247 for vocals, Gefell m300 for guitar, both into an Avalon AD2022. As soon as I apply effects, everything becomes distant sounding. I can't seem to get that real upfront presence that I hear in alot of other peoples recordings, or even the signal level that others seem to get. I have everything turned up to just under the point of clipping.

I really liked this one Rick, actually one of my favorites that you've done.

A bit of eq'ing could be done - see if you like the difference - but right now it sounds pretty good. I don't find it that thin at all.

The volume is reasonable on my headphones.

I pulled the tune into Sound Forge and found the average volume is fairly low - around -8db. But the peaks (only a few) are right up there, so if you boost it you will get some clipping. Guess you could try boosting to see if you got any audible distortion. Or, you could try a compressor/limiter to see if you can get a higher average level.

So there's a few tweaks you can try, but it sounds pretty good already!

Nice sounds Rick. Re your question about fattening up tracks, two or three limiters chained together with very mild gain reduction and makeup gain on each can do that pretty well for guitar. Blockfish limiter is good for that.
