Am I capable of good recordings???

I may buy some equip. Need some info.

Im thinking about buying a similar mic and Pre used above. Pay no mind to the music, I know its horrible, Im just familiar with the set-up used.

My question is Hardware...

My system: 1.2ghz. AMD athlon. 256 SDRAM and 40 gig HD, (both HD and RAM will be upgraded if I go through with this)

The above music was created on a new Gateway tower: 500 series. (2.5 pentium 4, 80 gig HD, and 512 SDRAM)

I like the sound of their recordings, quality wise. If I buy similar equip will my system suffer, or produce similar results???

What do yall think?
 
i have an amd athlon 1.2ghz with 2 HDs (a 20 and a 40) and 640mb SDRAM and I have absolutely no problems whatsoever.

i use the 20hd for applications and the 40hd for the audio.

i use cakewalk's sonar software with waves, dsp-fx, sonitus ultrafunk, and antares autotune plugins.

oh, and while you are upgrading your system be sure to get a quality soundcard with d/a/d converters as good as you can afford.

there's no point in getting good gear, and then having that good sound converted into thrash by a funky sound card.

i use frontier designs wavecenter/tango24, and another studio buddy of mine uses motu, so i can speak for those two pieces of gear with authority. they work well.
 
get a good sound card- audio isnt that demanding- not like graphics or video- i use a p3 933mHz and only 256mb ram, for 6 to 8 sim tracks without any hesitation- fast processor just makes editing a little faster. pretty much any modern computer with a decent sound card will capture whatever signal you feed it without a prob- this will NOT be your limiting factor- focus on your signal chain- sources (vocal, guitar amp, etc.), mics, pres, comps- whatever and most importantly educating your self on what to do with it- i know my biggest limiting factor is that half the time i dont know what the hell im doin :)
