I am going to run Cakewalk Home Studio XL, and need to know if I should run everything through a mixer, and plug the mixer to the line out in the computer. I am going to be doing a lot of keyboard midi sequencing, as well as microphone recording. What do I do?

At the very least you need something to take guitar/bass-level signals up to line level and a device to take mic levels up to line level (and perhaps supply a source of phantom power to condensor mics). A mixer would give you the most flexibility beacuse it will do both jobs. With enough input channels, you can leave all your line level inputs and mic inputs wired up and ready to go all the time instead of swapping cables.

Punksurfdrum, you need to go to the line in of your soundcard!

how are you planning to do the midi stuff? using software samplers or synths?

Thanks for all of the replies, I am going to use software synths, and a keyboard controller. Yeah, I meant the line in of the soundcard, thanks Randy!

If all you were doing is midi stuff with soft synths you obviously don't need a mixer. Whether or not you really need a mixer depends on how many audio tracks you need to record and what kind of tracks....If you are recording a bunch of audio in addition to the midi, a mixer might be the way to go. However, if you just want to record one or two tracks with your midi stuff, you might be better of getting a pre-amp instead of a mixer.

Yeah, I'm gonna do miking as well as midi stuff, hopefully combining them to do some pretty neat stuff. I am pretty sure that a mixer is the way to go. Can I use a powered mixer and just bypass the amp? Because I see a main output that I think bypasses the amp. I hope I can use this, because it will save a lot of money.

Do you already have a powered mixer? If so , you don't need a power amp...However, I think most of these are designed for live applications. Instead of a powered mixer, you could get some powered monitors...There are a lot of powered or 'active' monitors out there. But if you've got the powered mixer, go with that.
