Up 'till now I have been recording via ADAT (only 8 tracks). I finally got my PC built and just recieved my sound cards (Phase 88s).
Here's my problems:

1. I can't get SONAR PE to recognize ALL of the inputs and outputs of the Phase 88s... it should be 16 I/O plus MIDI and S/PDIF but it shows 12 In 10 Out. Not to mention they are all grouped (ie. 1/2, 3/4, etc.),

2. My onboard audio is C-Media and won't work with SONAR, so I want to be able to use 2 of the outputs on the Phasee 88s as my MAIN OUTS to go to my monitors and just disable the onboard sound.

My gear:

PC - 2.6 Ghz P4, 1024MB RAM, 200 GB ATA hard drive

Software - SONAR PE, Soundforge, ACID Pro

Soundcard(s) - Two Terratec "Phase 88"s (16 I/O)

Board - Yamaha 16 channel mixer (will serve as pre-amp using direct outs to feed soundcard)

I have all kinds of outboard gear, mics, and the such. I record a 3-piece hard rock band (my band ;)). I have 9 mics on the drum kit, guitar, vox, and bass, and the occasional keyboard (will use MIDI but that is another topic for another day!)

So anyone familiar with either the Phasee 88s and/or SONAR using multiple soundcards?

Are you sure you've highlighted ALL the options in the Options, Audio driver list dialog?

The grouping is a Windows thing, it's the way it is. My c-port groups them the same. In Sonar, when you select the input you should be able to select left (1/2), right (1/2) stereo(1/2) etc. On the output if you want the channel to come out of output 1, you need to set the output as 1/2 and pan the channel in sonar full left. A bit of a pain, but I haven't seen any other way to do it.

Are you sure you've highlighted ALL the options in the Options, Audio driver list dialog?

Yeah, i've tried highlighting them all and tried (for the outputs) just highlighting the outs that I want to use as my main outs. No luck. I get the message "some drivers are not supported or are in use by another application". Very frustrating.

If you pull one of the cards, does Sonar then recognise all the drivers on the remaining card?

Haven't tried that yet. If I want to set outputs 1/2 from one of the Phase 88s as my MAIN OUTS from Sonar what would I have to do?

Have all the tracks going to output 1/2... Is this what you mean?

Right, i want the main mix to be sent out of 2 of the tracks of the soundcard (ie. 1/2) to feed the monitors.

In Sonar, just click the button at the bottom of your main bus, and select from the list of outputs

Don't want to complicate things here, but a quick question for someone who knows Sonar better than I:

Does Sonar support ASIO? If so, have you chosen the ASIO list of drivers? In most multitracking apps, they should look a lot different than the WDM or MME list.

I'll try again and give you a more accurate description of what's wrong. I tried ASIO, WDM, etc. all have there problems! Pain in the ass if you ask me! I just wanna get this thing up and running! BRB

Alright, I spent all day trying to get this all to work right. What I want to do is have all the instruments go into the Yamaha 16 channel mixer (all 16 are full now!) and run Aux sends from the board to headphone amps for monitoring while tracking. I will send all tracks via direct outs to each channel on the Phase 88 (16) and ultimately record them in SONAR PE.

I want to use channels 1/2 on my Master Phase 88 card as my main outs from the PC straight into my Tannoy Reveal Active monitors. Sound good? I like the idea of tracking from the board to eliminate latency as a factor (until overdubs, not worried about that yet).

The problems that I faced today were:

- I am using ASIO drivers, yet I still don't see all my I/Os.
- I can get the tracks to record but can't hear anything. I have set the outputs to the ones I have hooked up to my monitors (1/2 (Master)) but to no avail.

How nice would it be if I could just plug the stuff in and it would work! :o
