This is my first new song in 2 full years. It's written for a delightful 17 year old girl, who was very kind in doing a commissioned original piece of art for my daughter, and when asked what she wanted for it in return, she said "art for art; write me a song!". So, I'm trying to leverage my Swannanoa Gathering mojo and I marshalled together this happy little jaunt. I'm having a flute solo in the middle section, and I might have the flautist double the melody too, not sure. But, I'm really stretching myself compositionally (I'm not "folky") and instrumentally (guitar is NOT my strong instrument, I'm a bassist and drummer). But, I'm pretty pleased. I bought some new congas and stuff, so I wanted to use them too...

Call this one 85% done...

Recorded through MOTU 8pre into Audition, Martin DXME 3 times, and my Peavey bass, and congas and stuff, all guitars through L.R. Baggs DI, into the MOTU.

HEATHER

I like the bass leading this one. Always such very pretty stuff from you.

Phaser was a great choice.

Nice work on the percussion - all the elements sound very nice together.

I especially like the chime or glockenspiel or whatever. Great choice.

This song has great balance.

This song has great balance.

Thanks! I was going for old-school Grant Geissman on the melody. The clear single rhythmic chime is my new triangle, and the other is my big set of bar chimes... I've been working a lot of chordal stuff into my bass parts, it's rich-sounding to me... :)

So what art did Heather do for your daughter?

Excellent piece of music. The mix sounds pretty sweet. There's a bit of a lull around 2:00 which would be a good candidate for some flute lead as mentioned. That's more of an arrangement thing though, as I said the mix is good the way it is now.

Excellent Llarion!
Nice song, performance,congrats!

Very well balanced lows and mids.
Not a "must have", but my taste would be for a little gain between 3 and 10k.

Very nice indeed. For not a guitarist, I loved the phrasing and licks. That bass tone is killer.

My ears are playing up tonight as I hear the bass leaning to a side.
Killer bass tone as already mentioned a couple of times.
Well played throughout. Good tonal balance - chime bars are pretty cool things aren't they!
This is VERY smooth.
I look forward to the fluted update.
What a cool lass to ask for art for art's sake!
Hope she doesn't sing a lovely lyric over it and make a billion though.

Sounds nice...personally I think the guitars are a little hot. The tune is sweet. I have headphones on but I have the volume quite low...but this song is really attacking. Anyway I hope the girl likes it. I'm sure she will. What girl doesn't like having a song written for her? And I don't mean anything sexual.

Man, I love it.

Really good arrangement. Everything has a place.

The main guitar sounds a little piezo-ish to me, but maybe that's just the tone the player had, dunno. The fingerpicked guitar on the far right is beautiful.

The percussion is great.

Wow, thanks everyone!!

To address some of your comments:

Tim,

The guitars break out thus:
"main" rhythm guitar - Key of C, capo 2
"right side" guitar - Key of G, capo 7 (slightly more bell-like EQ emphasis, up aroun 6.3KHz)
"Strum" guitar- Yamaha 12-string, concert (downtuned, capo 2) open position
Lead - put through the Waves guitar pedal suite, a phased melody patch, to sound like Grant Geissman in the 70s..
Congas and stuff, all open mic (condensers in x-y for stereo, no fake panning, I was moving the shakers around the soundfield

Gerry,
here's tink, this is why I want this to be good!!!

Rocket and Rayg, thanks on the bass tone, it's my trusty 1983 Peavey Foundation, recorded in stereo, put through some very mild expansion, the upper notes natually broke right and the fundamentals broke left, so when I was chording, it was a neat blend... :)

CIRO,

I already do have some mild emphasis there, but anymore and it got shrill in a hurry... :)

Thanks again guys, glad I still seem to have a touch; it's been way too long... :)

Cheers,
Phil
www.llarion.com <--- psst. New CD, 9/22/08! :D

Thanks Randy, I hope to turn the spigot back on! :) I used to be prolific, once...

Just one narcissistic bump, 'cause Rami hasn't heard it yet. ;)

I can't seem to download all of it - keeps timing out. I like what I hear, though! Very well played and recorded. Inspiring - I hope I can make productions that good someday.

Man, I love this! The guitars are creating a texture, but each is still distinct. The melody is just floating. But for me the real sweet spot is the percussion--great use of the natural stereo field. The shaker makes it...

Just wow!

I can't relate to anything with this song, so I'll just say that it sounds very smooth and well layered. Very nice sounding mix. :)

Well, you're only 4 according to your profle, so when you get bigger, i'm sure you'll do just fine... :D

Whitestrat,
Thanks man, very much appreciated... Folk is a new genre for me..

Greg,
Whattya mean, can't relate?? There's like, guitars and stuff, man... :D :D

Great mix and arrangement. It flows so nicely, nothing bites out at you. Simple and beautiful. ;)

Cheers

Wow dude this is like a Greg_L cover or something.... :p

Ok, dude your mixes always get lost in the list before I get to comment on them. So this time, actively making sure to listen.

Very smooth. The shakers definitely add a new level. There are strings in the back? Feels like at some point a string section should occasionally throw in some notes....

The bass is very cool. The drums (congas, you said?) are sounding very cool. The playing is very nice and the guitars all sounds very cool. Very smooth. Good mix. Above my commentability level. :D (Rayc, you set a level for prolific posts. As a result I have to resort to creating new words. :) ).

OK, tried again, and it worked fine. Very nice. And I have to say, you look a lot younger than 43 :D
