a song written out of respect for allan holdsworth, and his decision to forego fame and fortune, for writing his original music true to his vision.

a brand new version, of an older instrumental i recorded in '99.
i just recorded this version this past week.....
it features the 'cream machine' (my new custom strat) for all guitar parts, through a mesa boogie mark2b 60 watt head, into a roland 1x12 with a celestion greenback. miced with a combination of sm57's and ADK hamburg mics.
the bass, is an ibanez srx500 thru a sansamp bass di, into a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic preamp, into a dbx compressor, thru a digital convertor, to the vs.

Drums are by Brent Dacus.

Anyway, I have nothing but good things to say about Allan's Resolve....the whole piece is outstanding, just like your other tunes on Trouble (by Bat's Brew)....

Very pro playing/recording/mixing/production on this again......

Is this your custom strat? It does indeed sound like a cream machine - the great playing makes the difference though!

Very nice song here. Sounds professional to my ears. Nothing really to recommend.. just that I enjoyed the song and dug the guitar tones/melodies/harmonies throughout :cool:

this IS the custom strat.... the usacg strat i built this past summer....
it's become quite the fun thing to play.....
it's very resonate..... the sound kinda 'springs' out of it....
it's got the bill lawrence pickups in it, the humbucker with the blades in the bridge, and the single coils in the other 2 spots....

that's a remake of an older song of mine, i always wanted to do over...
with live drums....
and better guitar sounds.....

i'm satisfied with the bass guitar mix though...
i think i need to do something to it......

any ideas on a mix fix?

Nice to hear some guitar playing here that's in tune, in time, very precise and done well.

My only niggle is the, really compressed, POD like, pre-amp gain, guitar tone, but that's just a personal thing with me. :o

no POD on this recording! like i said in the beginning of the thread, it's all mesa boogie mark2b 60 watt tube head (it's a vintage model!)
the only real compression used, was an ancient mxr dynacomp on the clean rhythms... i wanted them to sit really strong and smooth in the mix...
and i compressed the piss out of the electric 12-string guitar parts that are on the last 'solo' section of the end of the song.
there is no compression on any of the distorted rhythm elec's or the solo/harmony tracks.

i DID go pretty aggressive with a vintage-style mastering compression and limiting on final mix....
maybe that's what it is......
hm.

food for thought.

i'm still learning how to use my new Sonar program, and the Sonitus multiband compressor that i like, for mastering final mixes.....
 
Nah, it's just me. :o

I like the power tube overdrive tone more than the compressed pre amp gain overdrive tone.

Let er rip man, it sounds good.

that power tube distortion is a sweet nectar delivered from god above.

that's why i also use a demeter iso cab, from time to time......
i drive the power amp hard, back off on the preamp gain, and use the barber direct drive pedal for all the crunchy/smooth stuff.

sums it up for me also...maybe bring up the drums just a bit...I REALLY dug the lead tone.
 
I've heard a few of your tunes in the past few yr's, got to tell you...your one of my favorite gtr player's that ever hit this bbs. Did I sugar-coat that to much? :D Some really tasty chops on this GONZO, me like it much!

i try REAL hard, which somewhat makes up for my meager skill...
 
on the compression issue..

i've noticed, that because of the higher output of the bill lawerence 500L in the bridge, it DOES seem to cause the preamp section to compress a little bit more than, say, my carvin with a duncan custom custom in the bridge, through the same rig..

interesting...

while actually recording this, i didn't 'feel' any compression.....
in other words, it FELT really dynamic, and some of the compression effect is actually just trying to PLAY smoothly....
sometimes, i can do it better than other times....

but i did have a pod for a time, and it never quite felt right to me....
but i do like obvious compression effect, for certain things...
 
to much verb on the overs for me, or maybe the verb on the overs just needs a hi cut. probably less though.

the crashes sound thinner than i would like them to in a perfect world.

not really my style but,

the drum overheads...
yeah... i had to work with what i had...
and the drums were recorded dry, and i added some verb to the overheads thinking it might 'meat it up' a bit..
i guess i missed the mark on that one.
well, that's what this exercise is all about, trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, and i appreciate your ears and opinions about how to make it better....
i can smooth the verb out with high end rolloff ( i think i remember it being set pretty high, like at 13 or 14khz...) and then back it off a bit, to where it just starts to fill in behind the hits, as it decays...

i imagine the drummer would probably prefer it that way as well....
